Purpose
Job Description
Under direct supervision, performs work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility in the area of housekeeping operations and maintenance. Performs related duties as required.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
The Service Aide within Environmental Services is charged with and responsible for:
Typical Tasks
- Cleans all assigned areas, including but not limited to patient rooms, bathrooms, corridors, public areas, elevators and ancillary areas such as nurses’ stations, laboratories, lounges, locker rooms, etc. by means not limited to sweeping, washing, mopping, dusting, disinfecting and sanitizing.
- Cleans environmental areas such as porter closets, hopper rooms, storage/supply rooms and compactor area.
- Empties and relines trash, garbage cans. Handles and transports Non-Regulated Medical Waste (NRMW), and Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) for disposal.
- Transports identified waste in proper containers to Hopper Room for storage, and Compactor area for disposal.
- Assists in loading and unloading environmental supplies, filling stock requisitions, and aids the housekeeper in distribution of cleaning supplies.
- Performs institutional housework including but not limited to wall washing, vacuuming, and draperies.
- Follows the 10-step, High Profile Cleaning procedure to ensure maximum environmental care and cleanliness of surfaces and areas. Dresses patient’s bed after discharge cleaning.
- Uses the correct cleaners for the intended task and labels/stores chemicals safely and properly.
- Responsible for floor care maintenance (mopping, stripping, waxing, burnishing, etc.) and emergencies (ie: floods).
- Keeps mechanical and electrical equipment in proper running order and maintains control over supplies, tools and equipment.
- Utilizes the H+H Electronic Medical Records System EPIC for Environmental Services – Grand Central for bed and other cleaning requests.
- Assists with moves of certain items (e.g. file cabinets, beds) as assigned by the supervisor or manager.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to read and write English and to understand and carry out simple instructions.
Department Preferences
- Knowledge of principles and processes for disinfecting and sanitizing in a healthcare setting.
- Skilled in following strict cleanliness and infection control guidelines to ensure patients are in a clean and healthy environment.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and stand for long periods of time; work requires manual dexterity. Must be able to lift, pull and push 10 pounds at reasonable intervals.
- Ability to work in a public setting with a customer service focus on interpersonal interactions, communication and problem solving.
