Summary

Summary

Evaluates tooling need, conceptualizes tool design, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles components to fabricate and repair metal working dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gages and machinist’s hand tools. Applies knowledge of tool and die design and construction, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, machining and assembly procedures. Creates own design sketches/drawings as needed when a pre-engineered design is not available.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Works with engineers, team leaders, and operators to determine tooling need. Independently develops conceptual tool design when engineering tool design is not available. Adapts existing designs to new conditions and requirements when necessary.
  • Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines required to fabricate tools and fixtures.
  • Creates new tool and fixture designs for applications where tool engineering support is not available.
  • Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathe, milling machine, and grinder to machine parts and verify conformance of machined parts to specifications.
  • Lifts machined parts and manually and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable using devices such as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates.
  • Smooths flat and contoured surfaces using scrapers, abrasive stones and power grinders. Fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms using hand tools.
  • Verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances using measuring instruments such as dial indicators, gage blocks, thickness gages, and micrometer.
  • Heat treats tools or parts.
  • Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and fixtures. Recommends design modifications regarding construction and fixed tools.
  • Any additional duties as assigned by supervisor.


EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

Completion of Tool & Die Apprenticeship program or an Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two year college or technical school, plus 5 or more years of experience.

INGENUITY and INITIATVE

Considerable judgment and visualization required to analyze complex tooling problems and to develop unique solutions where only limited standardization exists. Ability to conceptualize tool and fixture solutions to manufacturing needs, convert into working sketches/drawings, and follow through with fabrication/deployment.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to communicate clearly in oral form.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as plane geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Completion of Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship or equivalent formal training program.
