avatarin’s flagship product is a mobile, communication AI avatar robot called newme. Deployment of the newme robot is the first step in a larger vision to pioneer an instant, sustainable, and inclusive mobility network to connect people to places and experiences. avatarin has been operating newme robots in aquariums and museums since 2021 and is working to expand deployment to public spaces including airports, hotels, hospitals, government offices, train stations, and retail stores in Japan and around the world.


■Job Description

We're seeking a senior robotics navigation engineer focused on development of our newme mobile robot’s autonomous navigation and docking capabilities. You will work on the ROS 2 Navigation stack and also work on autonomous navigation and SLAM using sensor fusion to enhance the robot's decision-making capabilities.

Your role covers comprehensive software lifecycle management. You'll oversee design, development, testing, and deployment, adhering to best practices in version control and documentation.

Teamwork and clear communication are essential and as a senior engineer, you will collaborate with various teams and articulate technical topics effectively. Your contributions will not only enhance newme but also guide our robotics initiatives towards future innovations.


■Responsibilities

  • ROS: Integrate the Robot Operating System (ROS 2) into the newme mobile robot's to enable enhanced functionality and scalability.
  • SLAM Implement Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms to improve the robot's mapping and autonomous navigation capabilities.
  • Navigation Algorithms: Develop and fine-tune algorithms for autonomous navigation, path planning, and obstacle avoidance, ensuring smooth and reliable operation in diverse environments.
  • Sensor Fusion: Incorporate data from multiple sensors (such as IMU, LiDAR, cameras) to enhance newmes awareness and decision-making.
  • Auto-Docking: Develop an automatic docking system that allows newme to autonomously complete the self-charge task.
  • Software Development: Follow the business requirements and develop, test, and deploy reliable solutions with best practices in version control and documentation.


■Must-have skills

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field closely related to Computer Science or Robotics Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Three years of professional experience in C++ development ideally demonstrated through Github.
  • Experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Python.
  • At least two years of specialized experience in Robot Operating Systems (ROS 1 or 2) with a focus on the development of custom packages, nodes with services and actions, and the navigation stack.
  • Strong grasp of algorithms for mobile robots, particularly in perception, localization, and navigation in ground domains.
  • Familiarity with a variety of sensors, including cameras, IMU, and LiDAR.
  • Strong collaboration, communication skills, and a passion for learning.

Working Conditions

  • Flex working schedule 07:00 to 22:00
  • 2 days / week remote working (Expansion up to 4 days based on the performance)
