Overview:

SOLINK is looking for an experienced Senior Engineer to manage the feasibility, procurement and construction oversight processes of renewable energy projects—primarily solar PV and battery energy storage—on behalf of SOLINK’s clients across all sectors of the market. The Senior Engineer role will serve as the Manager of the SOLINK Johannesburg Branch, with a key leadership role in establishing, leading, and growing a high-performing team within the Gauteng region. The position will be based in Johannesburg with travel across parts of South Africa expected.

Purpose of the position:

We are looking for a versatile and experienced Senior Project Engineer with Project Management experience to lead the development, procurement, and execution of renewable energy projects—primarily solar PV and battery energy storage—across various sectors. This hybrid role combines technical engineering expertise with hands-on project management and team leadership responsibilities. In addition to core technical and project delivery duties, the successful candidate will manage the SOLINK Johannesburg Branch, with a focus on building and leading a high-performing regional team in Gauteng.

What you will be doing:

Technical Development & Procurement

• Conduct project feasibility analyses including site assessments, technical due diligence, and financial/yield modelling.
• Lead client engagements to define project objectives and assess business cases
• Manage permitting requirements and compliance with local regulations
• Develop tender documentation and coordinate competitive procurement processes
• Evaluate and report on bids from EPCs/IPPs, supporting project award decisions
• Provide ad hoc technical and commercial analysis for internal and external stakeholders
• Drive continuous improvement in SOLINK’s engineering and procurement tools/processes

Project Management & Construction Oversight

• Serve as Principal Agent / Owner’s Engineer, managing contractors throughout the project lifecycle
• Conduct site visits, milestone reviews, and quality inspections
• Oversee contract compliance, design execution, and construction deliverables
• Coordinate with client-appointed professionals (QSs, architects, engineers)
• Interrogate detailed designs, datasheets, and technical documentation
• Monitor construction progress and ensure alignment with design intent and good engineering practice
• Track and report on project KPIs, deliverables, and key risks
• Capture and implement lessons learned across projects

Branch Leadership & Team Development

• Lead SOLINK’s Johannesburg Branch, acting as the regional point of contact for clients and partners
• Recruit, manage, and mentor staff in the Gauteng region
• Coordinate internal project resources and ensure high team performance
• Represent SOLINK’s values and technical standards in all external and internal engagements

Minimum Requirements:

Required

• Technical qualification (B/Bsc Eng - Electrical/Mechanical/Mechatronic)
• Minimum three years of solar PV project engineering experience (preferably in the South African C&I embedded generation market)
• Minimum four years Project Engineer/Manager experience
• Strong understanding of renewable energy system design, financial drivers, and performance metrics
• Valid driver’s licence
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills
