Summary

About the job

We are ChainCraft, a pioneering scale-up in the circular chemical industry with a bold mission: to make sustainable chemistry the new standard by converting organic waste into valuable, bio-based alternatives to fossil and palm oils. Our passionate and growing team forms the backbone of this mission, combining innovation, impact, and expertise to create real change.

And this is where you come in.

We’re looking for a Senior Process Engineer to join our team in Amsterdam.

The role

As a Senior Process Engineer, you will take ownership of a new pilot facility, where you'll be the driving force from planning to commissioning and beyond. You'll manage a cross-functional team and ensure seamless project execution while laying the groundwork for a permanent pilot facility. This unique opportunity is for an experienced engineer who thrives on building from scratch, leading hands-on, and scaling innovation from pilot to commercial production.

Responsibilities:

• Phase 1: Build & Commission the Pilot Facility

  • Develop and manage project plans, budgets, procurement, and timelines.
  • Align with Operations on SHE (Safety, Health, Environment), permits, utilities, and space planning.
  • Collaborate with internal experts and external vendors to design and install process equipment.
  • Oversee the revamp and commissioning of equipment and systems on-site.
  • Lead the hiring of 2–3 (junior) pilot engineers for your team.

• Phase 2: Operate & Transfer Knowledge

  • Oversee pilot operations, ensuring adherence to safety and operational standards.
  • Manage reporting to internal and external stakeholders (e.g., subsidy partners).
  • Work with researchers and engineers to extract and transfer knowledge to our FS1 project.

• Phase 3: Expand the Pilot Area

  • Grow the pilot plant into a permanent facility to support TRL 7/8 development projects.
  • Optimize and standardize pilot processes for future innovation scaling.

Desired qualifications

You bring a strong technical foundation and the drive to make things happen. Ideally, you have 10+ years of experience in pilot operations, R&D execution, construction, and commissioning. But we know that talent doesn’t always follow a linear path, so if you have fewer years under your belt but a proven hands-on mindset and the confidence to take ownership, we’d still love to hear from you.

  • MSc in Process, Mechanical, Biotechnology, or Chemical Technology
  • Solid knowledge of process design, scale-up principles, and industrial safety
  • Familiarity with fermentation, separation processes, and/or biochemical engineering is a plus.
  • Skilled in project management and stakeholder coordination across disciplines
  • Comfortable navigating fast-changing environments with a structured, practical approach
  • Proactive, hands-on, and team-oriented—someone who leads by doing
