Job Scope

The Senior Principal Scientist in Scientific Affairs is a highly experienced field-based leader in the Scientific Affairs team. They are seen as a top technical expert for the portfolio of molecular diagnostic test kits and reagents. They have technical expertise in the implementation of molecular diagnostic systems and analysis software in the clinical lab environment. They work closely with Marketing, R&D, Applications, Commercial and Technical Service groups to support product implementation and customer needs. They serve on new product development core teams as the voice of the customer and supply field-based intelligence for new product development and innovation strategies. They have the ability to interact with Key Opinion Leaders and Laboratory Directors with sufficient knowledge, expertise and confidence, and they facilitate strategies for scientific studies with the company's products that lead to peer reviewed publications.

The Senior Principal Scientist is responsible for customer training at high complexity labs and key accounts, which may include educational topics or technical training of international teams or distributors where additional knowledge and expertise is needed. The principal responsibilities of this position are based in the U.S. with international travel on an 'as needed' basis. They support the achievement of established financial and strategic goals, in addition to supporting applicable regulations including ISO, Local, State, and/or Federal requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to high complexity labs and key accounts as they adopt Diasorin molecular diagnostic reagents, instruments and software including IVD kits, ASRs and General Purpose Reagents.
  • Serve as a consultant for new and existing customers as a technical expert for the LIAISON MDx instrument, software and Diasorin Molecular products. May interact across different types of customer segments including National Accounts, Commercial Accounts and Hospital Accounts and across different geographical regions including international teams and distributors.
  • Perform demonstrations, assist with evaluations and provide on-site training for the LIAISON MDx instrument, software and consumables at high complexity labs and key domestic & international accounts where additional technical knowledge is needed.
  • Educates and demonstrates the benefits of key products to scientific and clinical customers. Coordinates continuing education workshops and seminars for laboratory users.
  • Provide phone-based, virtual and/or on-site customer assistance for reagent, software and system troubleshooting.
  • Lead the development of templates and protocols or other materials to facilitate customer verification and/or validation of our products.
  • Provide training to Sales and Applications or other internal teams with in-field or in-house training as needed.
  • Assist in data analysis and troubleshooting of customer complaints to support Quality, Technical Service and Applications departments as needed. Work closely with Marketing, Applications, Commercial and Technical Service groups to support customer needs in a proactive manner. Provide technical consultations and knowledge sharing to facilitate customer support.
  • Together with Marketing, develop training and educational materials for distribution to the customer and/or Commercial organization.
  • Facilitate collaborative relationships with thought leaders as advisors, consultants, and guest speakers and as investigators for studies with our products.
  • Initiate and facilitate scientific studies and Research Agreements. Assist in establishing Research Agreement contracts, data analysis and writing and review of white papers, abstracts, posters and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications as required.
  • Attend Tradeshows and other Regional, National or International conferences representing the company’s products. Lead educational and product-based presentations at Tradeshows and conferences and at customer sites. Provide Lunch & Learn educational seminars to customers on request.
  • Work with Marketing, Sales and R&D teams to provide strategic clinical input into new or existent marketing activities (promotional material generation, competitive intelligence and product launches).
  • Serve as Scientific Affairs representative on new product core teams and innovation projects. Interact with R&D, Operations, Quality, Regulatory, Clinical Affairs and other departments to supply field-based knowledge of customer user needs.
  • Assist new product core teams in the identification of beta testing sites and clinical study sites for new products and in review of clinical data and reports for regulatory submissions of new products.
  • Responsible for performing assigned tasks in accordance with applicable Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) regulations and Company EHS policies. Violations of EHS regulations or policies will be handled in accordance with the established Company disciplinary process.
  • May supervise and train other members of the Scientific Affairs Department and mentor Application Scientists or other technical staff. Carry out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Interview, hire and train employees; plan, assign and direct work; manage and appraise performance; foster professional development, reward employees; address concerns and resolve problems. Reinforce all EHS policies in span of control.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience And Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline and a minimum of 9 years industry and/or clinical laboratory experience. Previous experience in a similar customer supporting role is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with molecular diagnostic testing in a clinical laboratory environment preferred including verification/validation of FDA cleared and Lab Developed Tests.
  • Thorough understanding of laboratory testing for infectious disease with an emphasis on molecular diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of standards and guidelines relevant to implementation of molecular diagnostic tests in the clinical lab.
  • Track record collaborating on and generating scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as public speaking, slide creation and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience mentoring and/or training.
  • Self-motivated with a professional and engaged demeanor. Ability to operate with a high degree of independence.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Computer literate with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics, especially in the areas of epidemiological and population statistics such as sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values, etc. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Travel Requirements

  • 50-60% domestic travel

The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $180,000 annually.
