Petersen Engineering is seeking a Senior Mechanical/HVAC Project Engineer who is passionate about sustainable design and climate-resilient buildings. As part of our small but growing team, you'll help lead the design of high-performance, low-carbon, and Passive House multifamily and institutional projects across the country.
Success in this role means collaborating across disciplines, mentoring junior staff, and bringing a can-do attitude to client engagement and integrated design processes. You’ll play a central role in projects that make a real impact in municipal, higher ed, housing, and healthcare sectors.
Responsibilities:
- Lead HVAC system design and engineering for a wide range of building types including multifamily housing, education, healthcare, and mixed-use
- Collaborate closely in integrated design and build processes with clients, architects, and internal teams
- Mentor junior engineering staff and contribute to knowledge sharing across the firm
- Apply a whole-building design approach that minimizes energy use and HVAC system size by leveraging building form and envelope strategies
- Ensure projects align with goals for low energy use, low carbon, resilience, occupant comfort, and operational simplicity
Qualifications:
- 15+ years of experience engineering HVAC systems across a variety of building types
- Licensed Professional Engineer with a degree from an ABET-accredited institution
- Deep understanding of sustainable design, building envelopes, and climate-resilient systems
- Excellent client-facing and communication skills
- Experience with Passive House and high-performance design is strongly preferred
- Committed to mentorship, teamwork, and continuous learning
Compensation & Benefits:
💰 Salary range: $140,000–$190,000 depending on experience
