The Company
Gridmatic Inc. is a high-growth startup with offices in the Bay Area and Houston that is accelerating the clean energy transition by applying our expertise in data, machine learning, and energy to power markets. We are the rare startup that has multiple years of profitability without raising venture capital. Gridmatic is a great place to work with a culture that values teamwork, continuous learning, diversity, and inclusion. We move quickly and fix things. We are environmentally and data-driven, with a growth-oriented, academic mindset. We value integrity as much as excellence.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Frontend Engineer to design, build, and evolve the critical user interfaces that empower our team to optimize grid-scale energy-storage systems and accelerate the decarbonization of the electricity grid. Your impact will be in creating intuitive, powerful operational tools to simplify traditionally complex energy systems. This role is ideal if you are passionate about solving challenging UI/UX problems, building robust frontend systems, and directly contributing to the efficiency of real-world clean energy assets.
You will primarily use React to build these applications, collaborating closely with backend engineers who provide data via APIs. While React expertise is key, we value experience with similar modern frontend frameworks. Our technical environment includes cloud platforms like GCP and containerization with Kubernetes, providing a modern foundation for your work.
If you thrive on building sophisticated frontend applications that directly impact operational workflows, excel at translating user needs into elegant technical solutions, and want to apply your skills to a mission-driven clean energy company, this role offers a compelling opportunity. You will work alongside backend engineers, data scientists, and energy domain experts to build the future of energy storage operations.
What you might work on
- Architecting and implementing operational tools for our Storage team to monitor, control, and analyze grid-scale batteries in real time.
- Designing and building reusable, high-performance React components and contributing to the evolution of our frontend architecture and best practices.
- Collaborating closely with backend engineers to define and integrate with APIs that provide the necessary data and functionality for frontend applications.
- Gathering feedback from internal users (operators, engineers) and iterating rapidly on tools to improve usability and functionality.
- Contributing to the overall system design, ensuring frontend requirements and capabilities are well-integrated with backend systems and data pipelines.
You might be a good fit if you:
- Have 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong emphasis on frontend development using modern frameworks.
- Possess deep expertise in React, including state management (e.g., Redux, Zustand, Context API), component architecture, hooks, and performance optimization, or have extensive experience with a similar framework and are eager to work with React.
- Are highly proficient in modern JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3/SCSS.
- Have experience building complex, data-intensive user interfaces and operational tools.
- Are comfortable consuming and collaborating on the design of REST APIs.
- Can reason about concurrency issues and event-driven systems
Not required, but would be great if you also had:
- Experience building tools for internal users or operational teams.
- Experience or a strong interest in product thinking or customer success, demonstrating an ability to understand user needs and translate them into technical requirements.
- Experience running containerized applications on Kubernetes or with Docker.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or demonstrate equivalent practical experience and expertise.
