Position 1: Senior Firmware Engineer

Job Title: Senior Firmware Engineer

Experience: 4-6 years

Location: Bengaluru, India (IISc Campus)

Salary: As per Industry Standard


Responsibilities:

  • Lead firmware development activities across multiple medical device projects, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and efficient code implementation
  • Design a comprehensive firmware architecture that meets both performance and regulatory requirements
  • Develop embedded software for medical devices primarily using the STM ecosystem (STM32 microcontrollers)
  • Implement robust communication protocols and interfaces with other system components
  • Lead the implementation of IEC 62304 standards within the firmware development process
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for regulatory submissions (Indian regulatory pathway and future FDA submissions)
  • Develop validation and verification protocols to ensure the firmware meets all functional and safety requirements
  • Incorporate cybersecurity best practices into firmware design and implementation, particularly for integration of the medical device with a smartphone application
  • Identify potential failure modes and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies
  • Mentor junior firmware engineers and provide technical guidance to the broader engineering team
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in firmware development for medical devices or other regulated industries
  • Proven expertise with STM32 microcontrollers and STM ecosystem (development tools, libraries, etc.)
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ for embedded systems
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and designing for resource-constrained environments
  • Solid understanding of communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, USB)
  • Knowledge of medical device regulatory standards, including IEC 62304, IEC 60601, and ISO 13485
  • Experience with the full firmware development lifecycle, including requirements, architecture, implementation, testing, and maintenance
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical aspects of projects and mentor junior engineers
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex firmware issues
  • Self-motivated with exceptional initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision in a startup-like environment
  • Experience with regulatory submissions for medical devices is highly desirable
