Summary
Position 1: Senior Firmware Engineer
Job Title: Senior Firmware Engineer
Experience: 4-6 years
Location: Bengaluru, India (IISc Campus)
Salary: As per Industry Standard
Responsibilities:
Lead firmware development activities across multiple medical device projects, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and efficient code implementation
Design a comprehensive firmware architecture that meets both performance and regulatory requirements
Develop embedded software for medical devices primarily using the STM ecosystem (STM32 microcontrollers)
Implement robust communication protocols and interfaces with other system components
Lead the implementation of IEC 62304 standards within the firmware development process
Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for regulatory submissions (Indian regulatory pathway and future FDA submissions)
Develop validation and verification protocols to ensure the firmware meets all functional and safety requirements
Incorporate cybersecurity best practices into firmware design and implementation, particularly for integration of the medical device with a smartphone application
Identify potential failure modes and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies
Mentor junior firmware engineers and provide technical guidance to the broader engineering team
Work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
Requirements:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
5+ years of experience in firmware development for medical devices or other regulated industries
Proven expertise with STM32 microcontrollers and STM ecosystem (development tools, libraries, etc.)
Strong programming skills in C/C++ for embedded systems
Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and designing for resource-constrained environments
Solid understanding of communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, USB)
Knowledge of medical device regulatory standards, including IEC 62304, IEC 60601, and ISO 13485
Experience with the full firmware development lifecycle, including requirements, architecture, implementation, testing, and maintenance
Demonstrated ability to lead technical aspects of projects and mentor junior engineers
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex firmware issues
Self-motivated with exceptional initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision in a startup-like environment
Experience with regulatory submissions for medical devices is highly desirable
