Summary
Edge is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer – Power Systems Architect to lead the design, integration, and optimization of electrical power systems on our uncrewed aircraft platform. This role will be responsible for architecture definition, power distribution, energy storage, conversion, and system safety, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability for mission-critical applications. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to align system architecture with aircraft performance requirements and operational needs. This position is ideal for a systems-minded electrical engineer with a strong background in power systems and experience in the defense, aerospace, or high-reliability embedded systems sectors.
Responsibilities
The following job functions are a basic requirement but are not limited to and may be assigned other duties.
- Define and lead the power systems architecture across Edge UAS platforms, including generation, conversion, distribution, and energy storage.
- Develop power budgets, assess load cases, and drive trade studies to select optimal electrical architectures for current and future platforms.
- Design and specify power distribution networks, converters, battery systems, and energy management strategies.
- Collaborate with propulsion, avionics, and payload teams to ensure power compatibility, EMI mitigation, and safe integration.
- Define and enforce system-level power and electrical interface requirements, including voltage rails, grounding strategies, and safety protections.
- Support test plans and validation procedures for power systems, including lab, bench, and flight testing.
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to evaluate and qualify power components and subsystems.
- Generate schematics, wiring diagrams, and interface control documents (ICDs) related to the power system.
- Support the development of electrical system standards, process improvements, and design guidelines.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide cross-functional technical leadership on power-related topics
Qualifications
The following are non-exhaustive qualifications for the position:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required.
- Master’s degree in Power Electronics, Systems Engineering, or a related field is preferred
- Strong background in power system design, including DC/DC converters, power distribution units (PDUs), and energy storage solutions.
- Experience with high-reliability or aerospace-grade power systems, including MIL-STD-704 or DO-160.
- Proficient in electrical modeling, simulation tools (e.g., LTSpice, PLECS, or MATLAB/Simulink), and CAD tools (e.g., Altium).
- Familiarity with thermal management, battery technologies (Li-ion, LiFePO4, etc.), and EMI/EMC best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to produce system-level documentation, power budgets, and analysis reports.
- 5+ years of experience in electrical system or power architecture design for aerospace, defense, UAS, or high-performance embedded systems.
- Hands-on experience with system integration and testing of power systems in lab and field environments.
- Experience with cross-discipline collaboration across mechanical, avionics, propulsion, and software teams.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and systems thinking abilities.
- Effective communicator with strong documentation and presentation skills.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to balance short-term deliverables with long-term architecture goals.
- Comfortable taking ownership of complex systems and driving them from concept through deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with redundant power systems, fail-safe design, and fault detection techniques.
- Familiarity with power system safety, including fusing, current limiting, and fault isolation.
- Background in power system compliance testing and certification for defense or aerospace applications.
- Experience supporting DoD, DARPA, or other military power architecture requirements.
- Involvement in VTOL, hybrid-electric propulsion, or battery-dense aircraft systems is a plus.
- Leadership in developing architecture documentation and roadmaps.
- Experience working with suppliers and vendors to select and qualify power-related components.
