We’re looking for a Senior Designer who -
Has 2-4 years of experience in leading design work, with expertise in User Research and end-to-end Product Design and Visual Communication for Products.
Is passionate about tackling complex, civic challenges alongside other researchers, data experts, technologists, and policy researchers from different backgrounds.
Interested in working in the intersection of different initiatives through the objective of Data for Public Good (For example : Climate Action, Public Finance, Law and Justice, Gender, Urban Development, etc)
Will help us harness the right elements of problem solving through user research, information design, design thinking and data visualizations to build and scale open data products.
Can build, lead and manage a team of designers
Can adapt well to multi-disciplinary teams. Previous experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams would be a plus point.
Is actively interested in taking part in design discussions, attending design forums, events, conferences, etc.
Is strongly aligned with our values and finds excitement in identifying problems and architecting solutions
This position is a consultant role for 12 months (with possible extension) and will be based out of New Delhi in-office [Need basis travels to other states within India will be required based on project commitments]
We, at CivicDataLab, work at the intersection of data, technology, design and social science to strengthen access to public information, evidence-based decision-making and citizen participation in governance. CivicDataLab (CDL) harnesses the potential of open knowledge movements to strengthen the data-for-public-good ecosystem and enable citizens to engage in matters of public reform. We work closely with governments, non-profits, think tanks, media houses and universities to enhance their data and technology capacity to better data-driven decision-making at scale.
Our current areas of expertise include digital public goods & infrastructure (DPGs & DPI), climate change, public finance, urban development, open contracting and law & justice. We have co-created digital public goods and emerging technology solutions like open data platforms, data exchanges, data science models and citizen-led apps for improving participatory data-driven governance in India and other countries.

Take any current existing Design Project that you have worked on and create a 5 slide presentation that highlights your work explaining your design process, user research and engagement and visual communication (mandatory)
Please note applications will be accepted only till 6th of April, 2025 (Sunday).
We would shortlist the candidates based on their CVs and Presentation submitted, followed by a 1 hr interview call which includes a round of introductions, along with assignment presentation and further discussions.
If all goes well, we’ll have a final ‘Culture Discussion’ round, where you get to meet the rest of the team.
Experience: 2 to 4 years of conducting thorough user research and user analysis, designing responsive digital solutions for Web, Android and IOS. Having strong visual communication skills is a plus (Platform branding, design consistency through colors, typography and iconography)
User Research: Undertaking qualitative and quantitative research, developing key insights about diverse audiences, and performing segmentation by needs. Structuring research and leading the internal and partner teams through fieldwork, analysis of findings and insight development, and connecting the insights to design
Hands-on Design: Creating engaging User Experiences and User Interfaces by using relevant design software. Experience of laying out the Information Architecture, Site Mapping, Color Theory, Lo-Fidelity Designs, and High-Fidelity Designs ready for development. Knowledge of Design systems is a must.
Human-Centered Design: Have good knowledge of accessibility, inclusivity, responsive design and other principles/ design standards required for platforms and dashboards. (WC3, GIGW standards)
Design Tools: Familiarity and experience using tools like Figma, Adobe Suite, Sketch, Data visualization tool, Mapbox, etc.
Stakeholder engagement: Ability to actively engage with multiple stakeholders. Conducting Stakeholder Mapping, Stakeholder consultations, One-on-one interviews, Focused Groups Discussions and Events.
Design Thinking Processes: Understanding context, key challenges or potential problems, building upon the pre-research reports. Understanding the larger objective for whom we are designing, the relevant ecosystem, and scalability.
Internal Team Management: Experience in growing and mentoring Design Fellows/ Designers. Collaborating with an internal team of developers, data engineers and the project & leadership team to convey design ideas, processes, and methodologies

General knowledge of product cycle: Exposure to product cycles, data pipeline, data analysis, visualization solutions, and having a good knowledge of open source software is a big plus.
