Role Purpose(s)
The Senior Manager/Manager (Database) is a key member of the Group IT Infrastructure Team. He/she will be responsible in the area of DB design, sizing, tuning, support and maintenance.He/she must have an in-depth understanding of the technology, trend and technical components of databases (IBM DB2 and MySQL) and had been working extensively with the application development team.
Key Accountabilities
Senior Manager/Manager (Database) must collaborate closely with a large contingent of others throughout the PSA Group IT and external vendors. The collaboration is both prior to any deployment software & applications and in post-deployment, development of improvements plan or procedures. This demand very high levels of skill in communication and diplomacy, a passion for problem resolution, solution derivation, project management, attention to detail, and a round the clock service orientation.
Job Responsibilities & Duties
- Design, document, create, and modify server configurations that are highly available and scalable for Databases.
- Administer, modify & tune existing database configuration to allow it to adapt to the application, to improve its performance and efficiency.
- Provide advice to the application teams based on in-depth understanding of the technology, trend and technical components of databases (IBM DB2 & mySQL).
- Design and develop a DB Monitoring solution for the entire Global Terminal Operating System suite of applications.
- Responsible for Capacity management which includes Capacity analysis, review and planning.
- Ensure performance, security, and availability of databases
- Design, implement, execute and validate backup and DR plans for application infrastructure.
- Implement patches, updates, and fixes for databases as necessary following established Change Management processes.
- Provide Level-3 on-call support for database issues.
- Act as technical liaison for the application deployment teams on projects and support.
- Planning, implementation and management of the various software environments required for product application development and test as well as customer deployment and support
- Work with development vendors and internal staff to achieve objectives.
- Project management for projects relating to databases.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Sciences or other relevant fields
Working Experience Requirements
- 8-10 years of proven hands-on experience in administering, design, deployment and support of IBM DB2 will be mandatory.
- Experience in IBM DB2 PureScale will be an added advantage.
- 5-6 years of proven hand-on experience in administering, design, deployment and support of mySQL.
- Working experience with virtual teams and offshore development.
Skills Required
Must-have skills
- Strong proficiency in IBM DB2.
- Familiarity with IBM DB2 PureScale implementation.
- Familiarity with other databases such as mySQL will be an added advantage.
- Understanding of MySQL’s underlying storage engines, such as InnoDB and MyISAM
- Experience in setting up Master-Slave replication, Multi-Master replication, backup, point in time recovery, high available configurations and disaster recovery in a complex and dynamic production environment
- Knowledge of de-facto standards and best practices in IBM DB2 and MySQL.
- Strong communication skills and ability to add recommendations on architecture/design decisions that will ensure optimal application performance with IBM DB2 and MySQL.
- Knowledge of limitations in IBM DB2 and MySQL and their workarounds.
- Basic knowledge of Linux operating system (RedHat) and basic commands
