Senior Data Architect - Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently seeking a Senior Data Architect to join the Information Management Technology (IMT) branch. The Senior Data Architect leads the design and delivery of scalable, secure, and business-aligned data architecture across multiple projects. In this strategic role, you will guide data architects and modelers, ensuring alignment with enterprise modeling standards and semantic consistency.

In this role you will collaborate with Solution Architects and Product Owners to translate business requirements into effective data solutions, while working with the Data Practice Leads to drive governance, standardization, integration and the evolution of enterprise architecture practices.

This is a blended role: part hands-on architecture and modeling, part mentorship and coordination, and part strategic alignment with the broader enterprise data ecosystem.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Collaborate with the Product Owner and Solution Architect to lead the data architecture and design efforts. Implement scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions across multiple projects, ensuring alignment with business needs and enterprise strategy.
  • Translate business and system requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support operational systems and analytics platforms, ensuring alignment with enterprise model.
  • Guide Data and Solution Architects with data architecture options, ensuring solutions align with application and infrastructure designs and meet business needs.
  • Design and implement data access mechanisms (e.g., views, stored procedures, materialized views) to enable performant, secure data APIs for consuming systems and services.
  • Develop data sharing strategies and technical solutions that enable governed, secure, and efficient data exchange across systems and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct data migration assessments and develop implementation plans to support legacy modernization, cloud transitions, and new platform adoption.
  • Collaborate with the Principal/Enterprise Data Modeler to:
    • Align project-level data models to the enterprise data model(s) and semantic standards
    • Apply standardized conceptual/logical models in solution delivery
    • Harmonize project-specific terms, definitions, and domain boundaries with enterprise-level data design
  • Partner with the Data Architecture and Data Engineering Practice Leads to define, refine, and promote enterprise-wide best practices for:
    • Data architecture and integration standards and templates, naming conventions and metadata management.
    • Performance tuning, data security and privacy, and strategies to ensure data availability, SLAs, and failover for robust and resilient solutions.
    • Adoption, adherence, and continuous evolution of architecture patterns.
  • Support governance and compliance with different architecture domains through project delivery
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to project-level Data Architects and Data Engineers, ensuring consistent quality, reusability, and standards compliance.
  • Maintain comprehensive data architecture documentation, including data models, mappings, lineage, and flows to support traceability, reuse, and audit-readiness.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in data architecture and design for software development, including at least 5 years of delivering enterprise IT data services solutions for analytics.
  • Proven expertise in designing and delivering end-to-end data architecture solutions, including conceptual, logical, and physical data models, data flows, mappings, and other key artifacts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Extensive experience in cloud data architecture, with a strong track record of implementing scalable, secure, and resilient data solutions from design to deployment—preferably within regulated industries such as oil and gas or government.
  • Expert-level proficiency in data modeling using tools such as ER/Studio, Microsoft Visio, or equivalent and SQL scripting (DDL/DML), with hands-on experience optimizing data solutions for performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Strong leadership and mentorship capabilities, with the ability to guide technical teams, communicate complex architectural patterns clearly, and foster alignment across business and IT stakeholders.
  • Highly organized and adaptable, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple initiatives in fast-paced environments, prioritize effectively, and respond to evolving business needs and timelines.

What we offer you:
