Job Summary:
Applies the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing.
Job Duties:
Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Abstracts clinical information from a variety of medical records and assigns appropriate ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCs and ADA codes to patients' records according to established procedures. Adheres to official coding guidelines and internal policies concerning code assignments. Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous or unclear for coding purposes. Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to supervisor or department manager for resolution. Analyzes, enters, and manipulates database. Confirms appropriate code assignments. Stays familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within medical coding. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision. Maintains verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal, tribal, and/or state regulations. Maintains the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a patient, unless authorized in writing by the patient or required by law or court order. Complies with the applicable state, tribal, and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any record created, maintained, transferred or destroyed, whether the record is written, taped, computerized or stored in any other medium. Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:
CERTIFIED CLINICAL CODER I
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and less than one year of specialized training or education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
One year of paid work experience (need not be related to medical coding is required)
CERTIFIED CLINICAL CODER II
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and less than one year of specialized training or education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
One (1) year full-time paid experience as a certified medical/clinical coder. Three (3) years full-time paid experience as a non-certified medical/clinical coder may be substituted for the one year as a certified medical/clinical coder.
CERTIFIED CLINICAL CODER III
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and less than one year of specialized training or education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Three (3) years full-time paid experience as a certified medical/clinical coder. No substitutions.
COMPUTER SKILLS
An individual should have knowledge of Database, Internet, Spreadsheet, and Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Credential in medical coding from recognized nationally accrediting agency, i.e., American Health Information Management Association (CCS or CCS-P) or American Academy of Professional Coders (CPC).
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
None required.

Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
