Job Description
Summary
The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for managing and overseeing various aspects of land development projects, including site-planning, design, and permitting for residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments. This role will require a deep understanding of state and local building codes, regulations and engineering design practices.
Essential Job Functions
Technical Support/Expertise
- Develop detailed site layouts, grading plans, drainage systems, utility plans, and other civil engineering components necessary for land development.
- Conduct site assessments and evaluations and review topographical data, environmental, and geotechnical analyses, to inform design decisions.
- Support the preparation of permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies.
- Lead and coordinate land development projects from conceptual design through construction, ensuring timely completion, compliance with local codes, and adherence to budget.
- Conduct business development with new and existing clients.
Document & Reporting
- Prepare engineering reports, including hydrologic analyses, plans, and specifications for review by clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Prepare proposals, including scope and fee, for new work.
- Provide cost estimates for land development projects and track expenses throughout the project lifecycle.
- Identify potential risks or issues early in the process and propose solutions to mitigate delays or additional costs.
Communication & Collaborative Support
- Communicate regularly with clients to update project progress, address concerns, and provide technical expertise as needed.
- Work closely with architects, surveyors, urban planners, environmental consultants, and contractors to ensure smooth project execution.
- Provide oversight during the construction phase to ensure adherence to designs and schedules, resolve technical issues, and review contractor submittals.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure all designs meet state and local building codes, regulations and engineering design practices.
- Ensure that construction aligns with design specifications and quality standards, and help resolve any technical issues that arise.
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor junior designers and engineers, providing guidance on project tasks, technical challenges, and professional development.
Requirements
Experience Required
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in land development engineering, preferably in California or similar regulatory environments. Experience working with municipalities and private clients in California.
- Possess and maintain valid California Class “C” driver license.
Education Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in California or, if licensed in another state, the ability to obtain California licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
- Specialty certifications are highly desired.
Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, proposals, and collaborating with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft tools, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, MS Teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex land development challenges.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and work effectively under deadlines.
Competencies
- Ability to work independently and in team environment.
- Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D, HydroCAD or similar stormwater modeling software, and other relevant design tools.
- Familiarity with state and local building codes, regulations and engineering design practices.
- Understanding of hydrologic modeling and analysis.
