Summary

Job Title: Security Operations (SecOps) Manager


Role:

As a Security Operations (SecOps) Manager at the University of Reading, you will be at the forefront of protecting critical IT infrastructure and data. This role involves leading a team responsible for managing security operations, identity services, and Microsoft 365 environments. You will play a vital role in the University's cyber defence strategy, working closely with IT colleagues and external partners to detect, prevent, and respond to security threats.

Responsibilities:

Lead and manage security operations, including threat detection, incident response, and vulnerability management.

Act as a technical manager for identity and access management services, ensuring secure, automated access for university staff and students.

Design and implement long-term security strategies, focusing on automation and proactive threat detection.

Oversee the outsourced 24/7 security operations service, ensuring seamless protection of critical infrastructure.

Build strong relationships with technology teams, influencing security processes and policies.

Conduct regular reviews of security tools, technologies, and processes to ensure effectiveness.

Lead the University’s response to security incidents, coordinating recovery efforts with internal teams and external vendors.

Maintain and improve security documentation, ensuring alignment with ITSM best practices.

Monitor and analyze performance metrics to identify trends and support continuous improvement.

Stay updated on emerging security threats and industry best practices, actively participating in relevant professional networks.



Skills/Must Have:

Proven experience managing security operations, including SIEM, EDR, and incident response.

Strong knowledge of identity and access management technologies (e.g., Microsoft Entra, M365).

Familiarity with network security best practices, including firewall management, network segmentation, and intrusion detection.

Exceptional troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve complex technical issues.

Experience leading technical teams through complex security projects.

Relevant industry certifications (e.g., ITIL, CISSP, CREST, GIAC) or equivalent experience.

Excellent communication and team leadership abilities.

Salary: £57,696 - £73,039
