Job Title: Omics Metadata Annotation and Harmonization Specialist / Data Asset Creator / Subject Matter Expert

Job Summary:

Excelra is looking for a detail-oriented and technically proficient Omics Metadata Annotation and Harmonization Specialist to enhance the quality and usability of large-scale omics datasets, including genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The role includes curation, annotation, and harmonization of metadata to ensure accuracy, consistency, and interoperability across diverse platforms and studies. This work will be instrumental in advancing integrative research by upholding FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and enabling seamless data integration and analysis for cutting-edge scientific discoveries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive metadata curation, including ontology tagging and annotating omics datasets with accurate, standardized information (e.g., sample descriptions, experimental conditions).
  • Utilize controlled vocabularies and ontologies (e.g., MeSH, GO, EFO) to ensure consistency across datasets, enhance data searchability, and facilitate cross-study comparisons.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in metadata formats, terminologies, and structures across diverse omics datasets to ensure seamless data integration and analysis.
  • Standardize data formats and adhere to client established metadata standards to improve data quality and accessibility.
  • Implement rigorous quality control measures to ensure metadata accuracy, completeness, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, bioinformaticians, and research scientists, to understand data needs, project goals, and harmonization requirements.
  • Contribute to the preparation of relevant marketing collateral as needed.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in field of life-sciences with strong domain knowledge of biological sciences.
  • Experimental knowledge of various molecular biology techniques like sequencing, cell-culture, animal models, drug treatments and disease biology.
  • Proficient in understanding and interpreting large datasets from open-access repositories and academic research, as well as related literature.
  • Familiarity with various data repositories like PUBMED, NCBI, GEO, ArrayExpress, EMBL), and ontologies like MeSH, GO, EFO.
  • Knowledge of FAIR data principles and data interoperability.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey the messages effectively to stakeholders and customers.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with a keen attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy, eye for inconsistencies between these various sources.
  • Strong team player with a proactive approach to sharing knowledge and learning from others.
  • Basic computational skills like PowerPoint, Word and Excel


Optional Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with metadata curation, annotation, and harmonization, specifically with omics datasets (genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Linux, BASH scripting, R studio and know-how of cloud computing is a plus
