Position Overview: The Science Program Manager will manage the expansive, global scientific research program at Beneath The Waves, ensuring alignment with the organization's vision and impact goals. This role includes planning, facilitating, and participating in research expeditions and field/laboratory work, while working with collaborating researchers, government partners, and other stakeholders. The Science Program Manager will drive impactful research, cultivate and manage key partnerships, and support the implementation of conservation strategies.
Key responsibilities include: (1) supervising an internal team of research scientists (with diverse expertise), their performance, and overseeing the timely delivery of high-quality research outputs; (2) maintenance and management of scientific databases, assets (including equipment), and sample inventories; (3) drafting and managing research permits; (4) preparing and contributing to scientific outputs, including peer-reviewed publications, and project reports for partners and funders.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in marine science, project management expertise, supervisory experience, and exceptional interpersonal skills to manage diverse teams and complex projects. This position reports to the HR Lead, works closely with the CEO and team leadership, and supervises up to 6 direct reports.
Key Responsibilities:Program Management:- Plan and manage a diverse marine research program and a series of global projects at various life-stages (early-stage, established, long-term), ensuring alignment of project objectives, timelines, and budgets with organizational goals.
- Prepare detailed project reports, summaries, and scientific updates for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in the preparation of grant applications and pitch materials for funding opportunities.
- Manage grant budgets, ensuring effective allocation of project funds and compliance with reporting requirements.
Team Leadership & Collaboration:- Supervise and support team of full-time and part-time researchers, technicians, and project coordinators, ensuring timely delivery of project milestones. Note: most team members are remote.
- Facilitate communication between internal teams and external collaborators.
- Mentor early-career scientists and interns, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
- Contribute to public outreach efforts, including writing blog posts, delivering presentations, and engaging with the media.
Scientific Leadership:- Collaborate with the Chief Science Officer and research team to design and implement scientifically rigorous studies.
- Provide input on experimental designs, data collection methods, and analyses.
- Lead or co-author scientific studies and oversee the preparation of scientific outputs.
- Participate (and sometimes lead) field research expeditions, laboratory analyses, and other scientific activities.
Partnership Development:- Maintain existing partnerships with research institutions, universities, government agencies, NGOs, and private stakeholders, as well as enhance network with new partnerships
- Represent the organization at conferences, workshops, and public events to promote research and conservation outcomes.
Experience:
- Graduate degree (PhD preferred, minimum MS) in marine science or biology, environmental science or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years experience post-graduate degree, in the marine research or conservation industry
- Proven track record in managing large-scale international projects and supervising multidisciplinary teams.
- Evidence of leadership in marine science, including participation in peer-reviewed scientific publications (with at least 5 published in the last 5 years)
- Demonstrated track-record engaging with high-level external partners from the public and private sectors
Skills:

- Familiarity with GIS, and programming (R, Python, or similar tools) is a plus.

- Expertise in marine ecosystems and exposure to various disciplines and methodologies within the broader marine science and conservation field
- Understanding of the marine science community and current research trends.
- Familiarity with international environmental policy frameworks.
