Summary

Position Summary:

The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of health and safety within the utility operations environment. This includes implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other applicable safety regulations, and fostering a culture of safety among field and office personnel. The Safety Manager plays a critical role in protecting employees, the public, and company assets across all utility work, including excavation, hydro excavation, locating, and equipment operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures specific to the utilities industry.
  • Conduct regular field audits and safety inspections on job sites, ensuring compliance with OSHA, DOT, and environmental regulations.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses; lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Work with the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation and MCOs to report on workplace injuries.
  • Maintain detailed safety records, including training logs, injury reports, vehicle incident reports, and corrective actions.
  • Provide safety training and orientation for new hires and ongoing safety education for existing employees.
  • Oversee compliance with drug and alcohol testing requirements for CDL and non-CDL employees.
  • Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analysis (JHA) reviews.
  • Monitor the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure employees are trained on proper usage.
  • Coordinate emergency response procedures and drills for field and facility operations.
  • Track and report on safety KPIs and trends; deliver monthly safety performance updates to leadership.
  • Act as the point of contact during regulatory inspections and ensure timely responses to citations or required corrections.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and managers to proactively identify risks and improve safe work practices.
  • Stay up to date with changes in health and safety laws and industry best practices.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred; however, 5+ years of experience as a Safety Manager in the utilities, construction, or field services industry will be accepted instead of a degree.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and utility-related safety standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and training skills.
  • EHS certification is a plus.
  • Exhibit strong leadership and communication skills with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to work effectively in both field and office environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour, First Aid/CPR, or CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician) are highly desirable.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; ability to travel to job sites as needed.


Work Environment:

  • Frequent travel to field sites across service areas; exposure to outdoor elements.
  • May require lifting up to 50 lbs., walking over uneven terrain, and entering confined spaces.
  • May require availability during off-hours for incident response or emergencies.
