Summary:

STEM for the Future is seeking dedicated and compassionate Robotics Mentors to support our FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams made up of Special Needs and ESL (English as a Second Language) students. As a Robotics Mentor, you will play a key role in creating a supportive, inclusive environment where all students can explore STEM, build critical thinking skills, and develop teamwork. Success in this position looks like empowering students to grow in confidence, learn new skills, and experience the excitement of problem-solving in a way that celebrates their unique abilities and backgrounds. Your work will directly support our mission to ensure that STEM education is accessible and inclusive for all learners.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the team in brainstorming, designing, testing, and refining their FLL innovation projects.
  • Foster an inclusive and respectful team environment that encourages participation from all students, regardless of language proficiency or learning style.
  • Adapt mentoring strategies to meet the individual needs of Special Needs and ESL students.
  • Model effective teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Attend weekly or biweekly team meetings (virtual and/or in-person).
  • Help prepare students for FLL competitions, including judging sessions, robot runs, and project presentations.
  • Communicate with team leaders and program coordinators to provide progress updates and share any support needs.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience working with Special Needs children.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent experience (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on patience and clarity.
  • Commitment to inclusive, student-centered mentoring practices.
  • Ability to pass a background check if required.
  • Enthusiasm for STEM education, mentorship, and youth empowerment.

  • Students feel supported, confident, and excited to participate.
  • Students complete their projects and are prepared to present at competitions and showcases.
  • Teams demonstrate growth in teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills over the season.
  • The mentor maintains positive, regular communication with students and program leadership.
