About the State Fair of Texas

Since its inception in 1886, the State Fair of Texas has celebrated all things Texan by promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment in a family-friendly environment. The State Fair of Texas is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with proceeds helping to preserve and improve our home, Fair Park; underwrite museums, community initiatives, and scholarship programs to support students throughout the Lone Star State pursuing higher education; and help improve State Fair operations.

Summary

Oversee SFT Tram maintenance, assist the Midway Operations Manager as directed, work with Ride Operators and other parties to develop and maintain SFT Rides, purchasing and daily inspections to ensure operations are conducted in compliance with SFT standards and regulations, and oversee personnel and other resources assigned to operations.

DUTIES And RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions

  • Oversee that the maintenance of Trams and maintenance by Ride Operators of all SFT Rides stay in compliance with SFT standards and regulations as well as State and Local codes and ordinances.
  • Stay within budgetary guidelines purchases all needed equipment, parts and supplies for all SFT Rides and Trams.
  • Maintain proper level of equipment inventory for SFT Rides and Trams.
  • Inspect SFT Rides and Trams daily to ensure that all SFT Rides and Trams stay in compliance with SFT standards and regulations.
  • Oversee all repairs needed to SFT Rides by Ride Operators to comply with SFT standards, and State and Local codes and ordinances.
  • Work with Ride Owners who operate SFT Rides during the State Fair of Texas to maintain SFT Rides.
  • Coordinate and oversee any and all Ride and Tram Inspections as needed by State or Local institutions.
  • Maintain updated inspection information for all SFT Rides Manuals and Tram maintenance materials and any and all other pertinent information needed to stay in compliance with SFT standards and regulations as well as all State and Local codes and ordinances.
  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints and new developments.
  • Work additional hours immediately before and during the State Fair performing other duties (e.g., ticket taking, coupon sales, guest relations, etc.).

Marginal Functions

  • Support the Mission Statement of the State Fair of Texas.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all internal, state and federal regulations.
  • Complete all training as directed by management.

Requirements

Knowledge of

  • Computer usage and Microsoft Office (or comparable) products.
  • Three to five years of previous amusement ride and basic mechanical vehicular maintenance experience or related experience.
  • Principles, practices, methods and techniques of Ride and Tram maintenance and SFT general practices.
  • State Fair Ride and Tram standards, basic understanding of State Ride requirements, and other applicable systems.
  • Basic understanding of motors, equipment, air systems, and other applicable knowledge of general Tram maintenance.
  • Accepted safety standards and methods of ride operation.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Pertinent Federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations affecting health and safety.

Ability to

  • Observe and take remedial action on non-compliance with State, city, SFT, or industry ride standards and specifications.
  • Read and interpret Ride manuals, plans and specifications.
  • Design and implement updates and modifications to improve operation and safety of SFT Rides and Trams.
  • Maintain effective working relationships.

EXPERIENCE And TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Preferred Education And/or Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and specialized training in electrical controls, aerial tramway maintenance and repair, amusement ride maintenance and repair, carpentry, construction techniques, or related practice.
  • Three to five years of previous amusement ride and basic mechanical vehicular maintenance experience or related experience.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED and EXERCISED

  • Reports to the SVP - Midway Operations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Minimize use of outside contractors if work can be done in house.
  • Exercises technical and functional supervision over part-time employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions

  • Office environment; exposure to computer screens.
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven and/or slippery surfaces, as necessary, especially during Fair time and special events.
  • Ability to work comfortably at heights and properly utilize safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment.

Physical Conditions

  • Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for
  • Remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time.
  • Moving short and long distances to access office supplies, meet guests, perform duties within Fairgrounds, etc.
  • Verbally communicate with both internal and external contacts.
  • Occasionally lift objects no more than 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Conducting field inspections requiring operating a vehicle, bending, stooping, climbing, crawling, keeling and visual acuity.
