Summary

Responsible for obtaining authorizations for all assigned OBGYN divisions and locations. Responsible for performing Medical Receptionist job responsibilities as needed.

  • Authorization Coordinator
    • Review schedule and obtain prior-authorizations.
    • Review schedule and obtain retro-authorizations.
    • Review schedule and obtain authorizations for Global Care Fee’s for EVMS Full Care patients.
    • Receive and complete assigned tasks from providers.
    • Receive and complete assigned tasks from staff.
    • Obtain authorizations and referrals from referring physician’s offices.
    • Complete EHR tasks in accordance with Medical Group Standards.
    • Communicate with patients regarding self-pay agreements.
    • Communicate with patients regarding co-payments.
    • Verify insurance eligibility.
    • Scan documents into appropriate charts daily.
    • Document authorization approval or denial in EHR.
    • Document approved authorization CPT codes with authorization number in EHR.
    • Compliance with Policies and Procedures within the Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine,
    • OB/GYN, and EVMS Policies and Procedures.
    • Performs other duties as assigned, according to the individual departmental needs.
Authorization Coordinator also functions as a Medical Receptionist with the below listed responsibilities

Medical Receptionist

  • Check in and register patients.
  • Confirm and update patient registration information at each visit.
  • Scan insurance card and picture ID into EMR system at each visit.
  • Collect all co-pays and payments and complete cash journals daily.
  • Scheduling of incoming referrals in a timely manner.
  • Answering telephone in accordance with Medical Group Standards.
  • Invite patients to patient portal (Follow My Health) and update status in the EHR.
  • Re-invite and assist patients with FMH issues/questions.
  • Provide correct labels for charts.
  • Compliance with Policies and Procedures within the Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine,
  • OB/GYN, and EVMS Policies and Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, according to the individual departmental needs.


Prior experience in a Health care environment, preferably in a physician group practice.

Experience working as a medical receptionist or other relevant role directly handling Medical Insurance information.
