Role: Vehicle Workshop Technician / Prototype Technician – Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGVs)

Location: Nuneaton + onsite role full time

Salary: £45,000 approx

Ability to pass a BPSS background check (required for government contractors in the UK).



Role Overview


Support the prototyping, assembly, testing, and maintenance of Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGVs) while ensuring compliance with safety and security protocols.


This role entails whole vehicle assembly and test on hybrid powertrain experience with motors and battery packs.


You will also need experience of electrical wiring and knowledge of mechanical aspects.


Not a must but great if you have Firmware knowledge to write software scripts.


Responsibilities

  • Assemble, integrate, and test prototype UGVs, including mechanical, electrical, and software components.
  • Fabricate and modify vehicle components using machining, welding, and 3D printing.
  • Wire and install electrical systems, including power distribution, sensors, and control modules.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software-related issues.
  • Collaborate with engineers to implement design modifications and improvements.
  • Maintain detailed records of assembly procedures, testing results, and modifications.
  • Ensure adherence to safety and quality control standards.
  • Operate and support UGV testing in both controlled and real-world environments.
  • Assist with software and firmware updates, calibration, and system integration.
  • Provide feedback on prototype performance and suggest design enhancements.
  • Manage workshop facilities, including COSHH records, health & safety reviews, incident reporting, and tool maintenance.



Qualifications



Essential:

  • Associate degree or certification in mechanical, electrical, robotics, or a related technical field.



Experience Essential:

  • 3+ years of experience in prototype vehicle assembly, robotics, or automotive technology.
  • Strong hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, wiring, and system integration.
  • Proficiency in workshop tools (drills, presses, cutters, grinders, soldering stations) and electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters).
  • Understanding of vehicle control systems, sensors, and communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering schematics, CAD drawings, and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in mechanical, electrical, and software-integrated systems.



Preferred:

  • Experience with lithium batteries, motor controllers, and autonomous vehicle hardware.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and firmware/software installations.




Current Background of an Ideal Candidate

  • Hands-on prototyping experience in a lab, workshop, or test field setting.
  • Exposure to autonomously controlled vehicles, electrical systems, and outdoor testing environments.



Additional Information

  • May require travel for field testing and deployment, from arctic to equatorial conditions.
  • Must hold a valid UK driving license.
  • Must pass a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) background check.
