Summary

A full service general contractor is seeking an experienced and highly organized Project Accountant to join their fast-paced construction team. This critical role will manage all aspects of project accounting, including accounts payable, cost tracking, lien releases, and supporting AR and billing functions. The ideal candidate is a confident, detail-oriented professional who can navigate complex subcontractor relationships, ensure accurate documentation, and help keep projects financially on track.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000 / year DOE

Project Accountant Responsibilities

  • Manage project and cost accounting functions, including invoice entry and data verification
  • Process accounts payable, cut checks weekly, and ensure timely payments to subcontractors
  • Prepare and manage lien releases, understand pre-lim laws, and ensure compliance
  • Assist with AR and billing functions, including preparing bills to owners and collecting necessary backup documentation
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Project Administrators, and subcontractors to ensure billing accuracy and payment timelines
  • Follow up on lien releases and handle dispute resolution with subcontractors professionally and firmly
  • Maintain and update schedule of values in spreadsheets
  • Support month-end close activities and meet strict project timelines
  • Handle a portfolio of projects, including both ground-up and tenant improvement projects

Project Accountant Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in project/construction accounting, preferably within commercial construction
  • Strong knowledge of lien laws, lien releases, and pre-lim processes
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Experience with Sage, Timberline, or MasterBuilder highly preferred
  • Excellent communication and follow-up skills; ability to handle challenging subcontractor conversations with professionalism
  • Task-oriented, self-managed, and able to stay one step ahead of project deadlines
  • Thick-skinned, confident, and able to enforce company policies firmly
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
