As the producer of the Philadelphia Film Festival and creative force behind the Film Society Center, Film Society Bourse, and Film Society East, the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) raises awareness of film as an important art form in Philadelphia and serves as a vital piece of the city’s arts and culture community.
Reporting to the Director of Programming as well as the Programming and Education Manager, The Programming Coordinator will be responsible for facilitating all Programming Department needs with a major
focus on day to day operations, admin duties, and department organization. In addition, the Programming Coordinator will assist and collaborate with film coverage, curation, and events surrounding year-round screenings and the annual SpringFest and Philadelphia Film Festival. The ideal candidate will have noted experience in administration duties and executing new departmental organizational systems in a dynamic workplace setting. They will have an established interest in the history of international and US cinema with an insatiable curiosity to screen, write, and research cinema’s past, present, and future.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Year-Round Curated & Festival Programming
- Collaborate with the programming team to develop a schedule of artistically and culturally diverse screenings and events that align with the curatorial direction, programming plan and budget; activate underserved and untapped audiences; engage and attract members, and expand the organization’s brand
- Facilitate the day-to-day operations of the Programming Department through developing new organization and communication systems within and outside the department
- Monitor emails and interdepartmental documents in preparation for quarterly programs and other special events. This includes the collection of film materials, receiving and submitting of invoices, and coordination with the venue and operations teams
- Aid in developing and implementing joint programming in conjunction with the Education and Programming Manager and Director of Community Engagement
- Screen assigned films for coverage and provide notes
- Engage in the community’s arts and cultural scene
- Assist in writing program blurbs and proofing all programming copy for printed guides and website
- Act as a visible spokesperson for PFS by introducing film screenings and moderating Q&As where there are guests in attendance
- Other relevant programming duties as needed
Philadelphia Film Festival (PFF) & SpringFest
- Screen assigned festival films and provide coverage notes
- Collaborate with the Programming and Marketing Departments on ways to promote and eventize PFF screenings
- Write program blurbs for assigned films in the PFF program
- Collaborate with the Programming and Development departments to help identify key programming targets for sponsors and donors
- Act as a visible spokesperson for PFS by introducing PFF and SpringFest film screenings and moderating
- Q&As with attending talent on a schedule determined by the Artistic Director
- Prepare for and attend PFF and SpringFest wrap meetings
- Collect materials, invoices and lead coordination with filmmakers, distributors, sales agents, etc for SpringFest program
- Other relevant duties as necessary
SKILLS
- Strong project organization skills managing complex, multifaceted projects with a focus in clear communication and efficiency
- Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others; is adept at creating a positive, collaborative and entrepreneurial work environment
- Proficiency in Google Workspace, MS Office (including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details
- Ability to critique, discuss, and research past, present and future of film
- An established knowledge of international and US film history with a continuing drive to learn more
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of a BA
- At least two years of experience in a team coordination or management role
- Experience having worked with a high-performance, collaborative, constructive peer group
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for PFS's mission
- Experience and familiarity with Philadelphia and the film and cultural community a major plus
- Flexible availability to attend evening and weekend events on a case by case basis
