LNESC is a nationally organized, community-based network of educational centers that provides educational, career preparation and leadership programs to disadvantaged Latino youth across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
LNESC was established in 1973 by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) to provide direct educational services to underserved communities throughout the U.S. & Puerto Rico. LNESC serves more than 11,000 students each year, providing educational counseling, scholarships, mentorships, leadership development, and literacy and technology programs through its network of 16 educational centers. Since 1973, LNESC has assisted over 550,000 students, sent 155,000 on to college, and awarded over $25 million in scholarships.
Program Summary
LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC) seeks a Par-time and temporary, grant-funded Project Coordinator to work with the Project Director to implement and manage the Upward Bound program in San Diego, CA.
The goal of the LNESC San Diego Upward Bound (UB) Project is to improve the academic achievement, retention, college enrollment, and college persistence rates of its participants in order to prepare disadvantaged youth for the academic challenges and rewards of pursuing and completing postsecondary programs.
This project serves sixty (60) low-income and potential first-generation college students from Grossmont High School. The UB project will select eligible 9th - 12th graders each year with documented academic need for project services and all participants will receive the academic instruction and supportive services necessary to prepare them for postsecondary programs.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The Upward Bound Project Coordinator will report directly to the Project Director. The following is a list of essential responsibilities for the position of Project Coordinator:
· Determine services needed in order to achieve educational goals and track progress.
· Plan and implement events and activities that support high school graduation and college preparedness. This includes college visitation trips, Upward Bound recruitment activities, educational and cultural activities for program participants and their families.
· Perform community outreach in an effort to recruit Upward Bound participants. This includes developing presentations using various media; speaking to groups of potential participants, parents and staff members of high schools and community organizations and assisting with other activities that promote the program.
· Maintain student records and perform data entry and maintenance for assigned students. This includes documentation related to acceptance into the Upward Bound Program and tracking progress using the program's Individual Service Plan (ISP).
· Collect both quantitative and qualitative data related to student progress. Provide necessary data for the program's Annual Performance Report (APR).
· Coordinate tutoring sessions during the school year and monthly Saturday enrichment activities.
· Provide assistance in completing college admissions applications, financial aid and scholarship applications and other necessary forms.
· Provide information about college.
· Attend professional development training.
· Coordinate summer component including summer excursion.
· Other duties as assigned by the Project Director.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree.
· Experience with counseling techniques and academic need analysis.
· Familiar with requirements for entrance into and financing of undergraduate college programs. This includes A-G graduation requirements and college application process.
· Be able to communicate with and relate to disadvantaged youth.
· Understand the problems of the target population.
· Good oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Have overcome barriers similar to those experienced by Upward Bound eligible students.
· Bilingual in Spanish/English.
Salary & Benefits
Salary range: $18.00-20.00 per hour ( Based on experience) Temporary job placement from November 2024-January 2024.
