Process Development Engineer
Overview – Support site manufacturing operations by providing quality and process troubleshooting assistance, leading process optimization projects, providing engineering input into capital projects, performing process safety studies and calculations, and implementing improvement ideas to achieve site objectives in the most safe, economical and efficient manner.
Responsibilities
- Support and adhere to the principles of the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® by protecting the environment, health, safety and security of our employees, contractors, carriers, distributors, visitors, customers and neighbors.
- Utilize lean manufacturing tools where appropriate. Design data collection plans, lead plant trials, analyze data, and implement improvements. Lead or participate in teams in support of optimizing plant processes for quality, cost, reliability, and productivity.
- Provide process design for engineering projects including P&ID development, equipment specification development, mechanical drawing evaluation and approval, and generation of process releases.
- Represent manufacturing, coordinating new product introductions, process optimization projects, and process and product changes using a cross-functional team approach that ensures all aspects of the product and process changes have been addressed. Identify, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding new process technologies.
- Be knowledgeable of and follow all Environmental, Health and Safety practices including but not limited to: manage waste movements according to satellite and/or 90-day accumulation requirements, inspect air contaminant sources and institute corrective action for out-of-spec conditions, prevent releases into the sewer and/or storm water systems by following BMPs (best management practices), activate BASF emergency response procedures in case of spills or other emergencies.
Education
- Degree in Chemical Engineering required
- Working knowledge of chemical processes both batch and continuous operations required
- Functional computer skills (Microsoft office) required
- Programming skills for advanced Excel use preferred
- Working knowledge of technical computer skills for process modeling calculations – ability to be trained
- Working knowledge of statistical analysis of process data
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of technical experience in the Chemical industry required
- Working knowledge of OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) Requirements preferred
- Familiarity developing Standard Operating Procedures required
- Understanding of advanced process automation systems preferred
- Must be able to work independently, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and serve as a member of or interface with multi-disciplinary teams.
Skills
- Strong analytical skills and demonstrated success in implementing Operational Excellence improvement tools such as Six Sigma, SPC, etc. in a manufacturing environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel in a matrix organization
