Principal Systems Design Engineer (DSP) Austin, TX Meet the Team Silicon Labs Systems Team's mission is to ensure our products have the right features and technologies to win in our target market segments. The team is responsible for generating technical requirements for our products in ways that leverage the latest standards and technologies to solve our customers' most urgent problems. As a Principal Systems Engineer you will serve as a technical leader shaping the PHY/MAC architecture across Silicon Labs' wireless IoT portfolio-including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), IEEE 802.15.4/Thread, Zigbee, and SubGHz (FSK, proprietary) solutions. Your deep expertise in these protocol families will guide the definition, modeling, prototyping, and validation of innovative PHY/MAC solutions that deliver market-leading range, robustness, coexistence, and ultra-low-power performance. Responsibilities: * Architect RF PHY/MAC solutions that meet or exceed application and standards requirements (Bluetooth LE, IEEE 802.15.4/Thread, Wi‑Fi, Matter, etc.). * Comprehend market and customer needs and deliver detailed technical requirements in our requirements management tool (JAMA). * Prototype & evaluate novel concepts using simulation (Matlab, Python, SystemVue, Verilog) and hands-on lab work to quantify range, throughput, power, coexistence, and reliability. * Collaborate with RF design, digital design, firmware, software, and product marketing teams to drive architectural decisions and resolve system-level tradeoffs. * Drive Standards & Innovation by participating in wireless standards bodies, publishing whitepapers, and driving high value innovations into our products. * Guide Development by reviewing design implementations, verifying that system features meet requirements, and supporting debug from lab bring-up through customer production. * Mentor & Educate internal engineering and customer-facing teams on RF system architecture, best practices, and new technologies. Skills You Will Need Minimum qualifications: * B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, or related field and 10 + years professional experience in RF transceiver or wireless systems design. * Expert level knowledge of at least one shortrange wireless standard (Bluetooth LE, IEEE 802.15.4, WiFi, etc.), covering both PHY modulation/coding and MAC scheduling mechanisms. * Demonstrated hands-on experience developing or validating PHY/MAC firmware or RTL; proficiency with simulation tools (Matlab, Python, SystemVue) and RF lab equipment (spectrum/network analyzers, vector signal generators, oscilloscopes). * Strong grasp of RF system metrics (link budget, EVM, sensitivity, blocker performance) and low power IoT design constraints. * Proven ability to author clear technical requirements and influence cross-functional teams through data-driven analysis and communication. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. The following qualifications will be considered a plus: * Technical leadership or architecture ownership for wireless SoCs that have shipped to high-volume production. * Active participation in wireless standards working groups (Bluetooth SIG, IEEE 802.15.4, Wi-Fi Alliance, CSA Matter, etc.). * Experience with coexistence strategies across BT/BLE, Wi‑Fi, Thread/Zigbee, and cellular. * Knowledge of security, reliability, and spectrum sharing techniques at the PHY/MAC layers (FEC, adaptive data rates, whitening, channel hopping, DFS, etc.). * Familiarity with agile development processes and requirements management tools (Jira, Confluence, Jama, etc.). * M.S. or Ph.D. focused on RF communications is a plus. Actual base pay could vary based on factors including but not limited to experience, geographic location where work will be performed and applicant's skill set. The base pay is just one component of the total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include an annual cash bonus, equity package and a comprehensive benefits package.
