About the Role:

We are seeking a passionate and innovative Principal Quantum Hardware Engineer to join our mission-driven team. In this role, you will lead the design and development of core quantum hardware systems, contributing directly to the architecture and performance of Qunett’s quantum networking platform. You’ll work hands-on across a range of experimental technologies—from entanglement sources to quantum memories—while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to drive systems from prototype to deployment. This position offers the opportunity to take on increasing technical leadership, mentor junior team members, and shape the direction of our hardware stack as we scale.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design, assembly, and validation of experimental quantum hardware systems, including memory-based quantum routers, entangled photon sources, and frequency conversion modules.
• Develop and optimize both quantum and classical subsystems—optical setups, cryogenic platforms, detection systems, and control electronics—while evaluating architectural trade-offs to enable scalable, deployable designs.
• Contribute to the technical vision of Qunett’s quantum networking platform by identifying system-level challenges and proposing scalable solutions.
• Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and researchers, sharing best practices in experimental design, documentation, and problem-solving.
• Maintain thorough documentation of experimental results and contribute to internal reports, external publications, and technical presentations.

Required Skills:

• 8+ years of hands-on research and engineering experience in quantum optics, photonics, or quantum hardware systems.
• Demonstrated expertise in designing, building, and troubleshooting experimental optical systems — including lasers, cryogenics, detectors, and classical/quantum signal pathways.
• Deep understanding of quantum networking concepts such as entanglement generation and distribution, quantum repeaters, and quantum memories.
• Strong technical leadership within research teams — mentoring junior engineers or leading projects.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in a collaborative R&D environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field with a focus on quantum information or photonics.
• Hands-on experience working with spin qubits in diamond (e.g., SiV, NV, SnV centers) for applications in quantum communication and information processing.
• Systems-level experience with nonlinear optical platforms for entanglement generation and frequency conversion, including polarization control and phase stabilization.
• Prior experience in startups or advanced R&D lab settings.
• Exposure to product development lifecycles and taking hardware from lab-scale validation to field deployment.
