Job Mission
The mission of the Mechanical Design Engineer at ASML is to create incredible products using the latest technology and manufacturing techniques, while collaborating with a team of dedicated and high-performing technical experts. Quality is at the forefront of the engineering requirements for this group and we strive to provide the best performing and highest quality products within the scope of the program schedule.
Role and responsibilities
- Assists with an assigned light source sub-system project through direct technical advice, specifications/design, approvals, and collaboration with Development Engineering team.
- Assists in providing a broad mechanical engineering design background and performs mechanical engineering analysis (stress, vibrations, thermal), design for control and distribution of inert and hazardous gases, air and water handling for thermal management of equipment and enclosures, large enclosure design, electrical component packaging, mechanical structural mounts and fixtures, design for manufacturability in low volume products, and design for configuration management.
- Assists in generating module or system concepts to meet product requirements.
- Assists in performing detailed design and component layout for new or improved subsystems.
- Assumes engineering responsibility for component and subassembly test development, data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.
- Performs tolerance analysis at system and subsystem level.
- Performs analytical analysis for thermal and structural components and sub-modules.
- Assists in project planning including key deliverables, timeline, and budget.
- Works with other Engineers analysts and CAD Designers for prototype and pilot detailed design.
- Supports driving full documentation of design including, BOM, technical drawings, test plans and procedures.
- Responsible for the research and selection of new suppliers with potential for turn-key provision of key subsystems. Responsible for providing technical expertise in the core technology area of the potential suppliers to reveal best design path and performance.
- Interacts closely with development engineers, scientists, suppliers, and QA to resolve quality issues.
- Advises Project Leads with technical expertise
- Advises and mentors lower level mechanical design engineers
- Presents technical data to a broad audience
- Possible travel domestic / international (10%)

Research
Develop and/or deliver a plan for significant aspects of a research program with guidance from senior colleagues.
Design Requirements and specifications
Plan and coordinate the identification, elicitation of product and/or project requirements; conduct analysis of those requirements for completion and alignment; document and manage requirements throughout the life of the project; and coordinate the verification of the end deliverable. Generally done at the project level.
Feasibility
Conduct complex feasibility studies from a technological and organizational perspective and document findings to complete cost-benefit analysis on implementing changes to business processes, products, or business unit structure.
Perform feasibility studies, contribute to the development of product road maps and contribute to the SPS/SDS. Identify feasibility questions and improvements in own domain.
Conceptualization
Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief (for example, in terms of functionality, performance and cost) that conforms to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
Preliminary design
Specify (sub)module using team input, design architecture, make technical choices in all phases, solve technical issues, devise new approaches to problems encountered and drive the development of the module.
Prepare high level design of the (sub)module fulfilling the requirements set while addressing architectural and interface choices. Document the high level design in the relevant SEG documents.
Detailed design
Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief (for example, in terms of functionality, performance, aesthetics, and cost) that conforms to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
Detail out the design including its documentation.
Integration
Integrate sub-systems into the system, execute configuration management, and provide support to projects
Product quality / Testing
Develop and validate complex new test methods and procedures for a product or operations segment, incorporating new technologies and meeting changing organizational, customer, and/or regulatory requirements.
Safety
Adheres to ASML’s EHS policies, procedures and mandatory instructions; identifies and mitigates safety risk and safeguards the environment and well-being of oneself and others. Instructs the team in safe working methods and identifies instances of risky behaviors within the team and takes appropriate action, escalating serious issues as appropriate.
Project management
Create high level work breakdown, support planning, provide effort estimates and manage assigned projects, delegate tasks and ensure timely execution and delivery according to quality standards, within the project management guidelines.
Communication and documentation
Ensure and support optimal communication of specifications to all relevant parties to improve the decision processes, and prepare the introduction of approved new projects by defining all technical specifications on system level for Development / Engineering.
Knowledge
Keep abreast of new methods and developments in one’s area of expertise and in general affecting ASML, develop and maintain own (mainly internal) network and contribute to the overall broadening and maintenance of ASML’s technology base. Share knowledge, including coaching and mentoring of more junior colleagues.
Education and experience
- Requires minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant work experience. Can consider a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience.
- Ability to translate, statistically analyze data, and effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats
- Skilled in designing complex parts and / or assemblies with associated calculations and backup data
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and able to work on multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to delegate work as needed.
- Experience with tolerance analysis at system and subsystem level, with the ability to generate a tolerance analysis as a deliverable for presentation to a technical group. This analysis should include, thermal, manufacturing and environmental inputs.
- Working knowledge of engineering materials i.e. ferrous and non-ferrous/refractory metals, to include manufacturability, weldability, compatibility, etc.
- Proficiency in Engineering Change (ECN / ECR / ECO) process required for new or revised engineering designs and documentation.
- Proficiency in making and reviewing 2D technical drawings and application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) required.
- Proficiency in Solid Modelling required. Siemens NX preferred, others strongly considered
- Proficiency in PLM / ERP / MRP software, Siemens Team Center preferred
- Experience performing and reviewing Finite Element Analysis, Ansys or NX simulation preferred, with the ability to validate with hand calculations
- Previous experience working at the pace of the Semiconductor industry desired
- Working knowledge of advanced machining and fabrication techniques is mandatory (design for manufacturing/cost). Knowledge of welding practices is a major plus.
- Proficiency in MS Office tools (Excel, Word, Power Point, Visio & Outlook) required

Responsibilities
- Must be willing to work in a clean room environment, wearing coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses and gloves for entire duration of shift.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee routinely is required to sit; walk; talk; hear; use hands to keyboard, finger, handle, and feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, and stretch.
- The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Can we be more specific: Must be willing to lift up to X pounds, pull Y pounds at least once a day and spend the majority of time (greater than 90% less break time) on the floor working on tool sets, walking three to five miles a day, and/or standing/sitting for nine hours.

The current base annual salary range for this role is currently:
$148,125-246,875
Pay scales are determined by role, level, location and alignment with market data. Individual pay is determined through interviews and an assessment of several factors that that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, relevant education and experience, certifications, abilities of the candidate and pay relative to other team members.
