Principal Mechanical Engineer, Design and Manufacturing
Job Summary

We’re looking to you to play a critical role in the development and support of leading-edge, industry-defining solar trackers. You will conduct research and develop components and systems to support our next-generation suite of products, and your designs will be utilized to mount and track millions of solar panels in the US and internationally. On our diverse, flexible, and cross-functional team, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with multiple levels of management, engineering, and other departments to move your ideas through our product development process and into production.
Key Job Responsibilities
Provide mentorship and training to peers and junior-level engineers on design best practices, progressive die stamping fundamentals, product development process, supplier interface, solar field logistics, design optimization, and other topics as assigned
Set the standard for the knowledge base of design for progressive die stamping, and are accountable for complete engineering programs
Create design concepts using computer-aided design and analyze using finite element methods, forming simulation software, etc.
Oversee and define test plans for design validation testing
Interface with customers to understand needs and align with industry trends
Collaborate with service personnel to measure and improve upon assembly practices
Engage with suppliers to understand manufacturing capabilities and adjust designs accordingly
Develop standardized procedures for evaluation and approval of third-party tooling designs
Analyze components and systems for cost optimization and create should-cost models
Use fundamental principles of engineering to analyze system trends using spreadsheets and other tools
Perform competitive analysis, learn industry trends, and suggest design changes to suit
Participate in trials of solar system component installations (periodic travel when necessary)
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with minimum 10 years’ industry experience in mechanical engineering (or Masters’ +8 years or PhD +4 years)
10+ years’ experience in mechanical component design
10+ years’ experience using commercial CAD modeling software
5+ years’ experience using commercial structural finite element analysis software
Sound understanding of fundamental engineering principles of statics, dynamics, and energy
Demonstrated self-direction on projects and engineering tasks
Ability to drive and manage change with designs, programs, and processes
Experience communicating complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD and any relevant professional certifications
Demonstrated creativity in problem solving situations
Previous experience with solar tracker engineering
