The Opportunity
This position works out of our St Paul, MN, location in the Abbott Ventures division under Structural Heart. Our business purpose is to restore health and improve quality of life by designing and providing device and management solutions for treating structural heart disease.
The Principal Clinical Engineer is a technical role responsible for understanding the function of medical devices and their use in the clinical setting (field). This role will require deep understanding of device function and its clinical use and will have responsibility for the technical aspects of device training, both for internal company personnel and for physician proceduralists, ensuring an understanding of technical device operation to achieve successful implant procedures. This will include developing and refining training materials as experience is gained. In this capacity, the Engineer will work closely with the field clinical specialist organization, who will have primary responsibility for case coverage. The Engineer can also serve as case lead for the procedure (especially with new generations of devices and new applications of existing devices - as the FCS team is developing these skills). The Engineer will provide support from within the clinical function for product development work, Design Validation and Verification activities, and will support pre-clinical activities. This role will have experience in interventional cardiac procedures and will support the FCS leadership and team. The position will also facilitate learning from implants to ensure dissemination of best practices and experience, providing educational support. In the field, the Engineer will serve as the device SME to facilitate the transfer of experience both from internal experts to the field and liaising between the field experience and internal stakeholders including Therapy Development, R&D, Quality Systems and Operations.
What You'll Work On
* Develop and provide technical training and support for the Field Clinical Specialists supporting procedures, and ensuring knowledge transfer from internal experts to the field, and the transfer of experience from the field to internal stakeholders
* Serves as technical subject matter expert (SME) that will support investigations into product experiences
* Serves as technical subject matter expert (SME) representing the clinical function for product development as well as Design Verification and Validation activities.
* Develops, leads and/or facilitates technical device-based training content in alignment with Abbott best practices - working both with internal Abbott team members and site-based health care providers.
* Responsible for troubleshooting, re-training, and supporting the field implementation of investigational product
* Provide direct support to the Field Clinical Specialist function in the areas of patient identification, case planning and case support.
* Identifies trends in customer, research staff, and other clinical trial stakeholder needs, reporting to the clinical director.
* Serves as the SME to relay issues identified related to product performance to the appropriate internal (clinical, R&D, Quality) personnel responsible for study conduct and other cross-functional (e.g., R&D) personnel regarding product development.
* Assures reportable device related experiences are reported within the prescribed time to trial compliance and/or PER customer service.
* Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Abbott policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
* Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
* Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned, which may include communication on evenings and weekends for time-sensitive patient and customer needs.
Required Qualifications:
* Bachelors' degree in engineering, biology, biological sciences or a related field
* Minimum 8 years' experience in clinical roles
* Highly effective in a fast-paced team environment
* Strong evidence of effective leadership especially peer-to-peer through indirect influence
* Requires Abbott-specific certification on percutaneous cardiac procedures and device usage, as well as immersion in clinical research and literature as needed
* Thorough understanding of engineering principles with previous experience in clinical engineering, or R&D role preferred
* Demonstrated ability to lead and/or facilitate educational programs to healthcare professionals
* Experienced working in a clinical environment, in the cath lab or hybrid OR, providing support for procedures, including appropriate conduct in a sterile environment (proper sterile technique, scrubbing, gowning, gloving); also extensive experience conducting clinical research following good clinical practice
* Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

* Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
* Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner
* Strong organizational, leadership and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail
* Ability to travel based on business need typically 50% of time, and up to 70% when enrollment / procedure volumes are high
* Demonstrated expertise with cardiac medical procedures
* Advanced degree (Masters, PhD) in a technical field preferred

The base pay for this position is $127,300.00 - $254,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
