Overview

We are currently recruiting for a Primary Design Engineer for our client who operate predominately in the engineering of substations and HV infrastructure in the renewable energy and power transmission industries.

As a Primary Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of substation projects, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with industry standards. Based in Melbourne, you will work on high-profile projects contributing to Australia’s evolving energy infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed primary electrical designs for high-voltage (HV) substations, including layouts, single-line diagrams, and schematics.
• Specify and evaluate primary equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, and busbars.
• Ensure all designs comply with Australian standards, client requirements, and industry best practices.
• Collaborate with secondary design and civil to ensure seamless integration of designs.
• Engage with clients to clarify design requirements, resolve issues, and present technical solutions.
• Assist with the preparation of tenders
• Assist with Project Management in specialist areas of expertise; provide technical and engineering assistance to Project Managers.
• Proactively ensure the processes and procedures for Primary Design are constantly improved to eliminate rework and shorten cycle time

Required Experience

• Proven experience in primary electrical design for HV substations (132kV and above preferred).
• Strong understanding of substation layout design, grounding, and earthing systems.
• Evidence of high-level ability in the preparation of engineering drawings
• Ability to assist with the preparation of tenders

Qualifications

• Tertiary Qualifications in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or equivalent.
