About FootIntel

FootIntel Foundation is an AI-powered nonprofit football platform on a mission to democratize tactical football insight. We aim to transform raw match footage into elite-level player reports; no sensors, no expensive analyst teams, no gatekeeping.

Our platform is built for underserved players, coaches, and scouts around the world. We are currently developing our MVP, and every contribution helps shape the future of equitable performance intelligence.

The Role

We’re seeking a mission-driven Player Intelligence Intern to help build one of the most critical components of the FootIntel platform: our computer vision pipeline.

You’ll work on tracking players in match footage, detect key actions (passes, off ball runs, tackles, interceptions, recovery runs, etc.), and generate tactical visuals (heatmaps, movement trails, action maps) that will be embedded directly into player reports. You'll also contribute to the early design and training of a scalable detection system, helping us move from fixed logic to adaptive intelligence as we grow.

This is not a theory exercise. Your work will be deployed to real players, coaches, and scouts around the world. You’ll play a central role in building the intelligence layer of our MVP, with the freedom to contribute creatively and meaningfully from day one.

Responsibilities

  • Use YOLOv8 + Norfair to track players across match footage
  • Detect key actions (e.g. off-ball runs, high-effort sprints, passes, tackles, etc.)
  • Generate static visuals: heatmaps, movement trails, action zones
  • Format positional/action data into structured JSON or CSV
  • Collaborate asynchronously with frontend/backend teams
  • Contribute creative input into how reports should look and feel
  • Support iterative refinement and training of detection models for long-term scale and automation

Ideal Candidate

  • Proficient in Python, OpenCV, and NumPy
  • Familiar with object tracking, computer vision, or sports analytics
  • Able to generate visuals using matplotlib, seaborn, or custom tooling
  • Understands football movement
  • Comfortable working independently and asynchronously
  • Committed to building meaningful, accessible tech

Our Stack

  • Python
  • YOLOv8, Norfair
  • OpenCV, matplotlib/seaborn
  • JSON, CSV
  • Google Drive / Firebase (integration layer)

Timeline & Flexibility

  • We operate async, on your schedule.
  • Expectation: 10–15 hours/week
  • We value consistency and outcomes over fixed timing.

Why This Role Matters

This is a foundational role. Your work will power the core intelligence behind our product. You’ll help build tools that showcase overlooked talent and redefine how performance is measured in the modern game.

What You’ll Gain

  • Real-world experience applying CV to sports
  • Portfolio-grade deliverables (used in platform reports)
  • Recognition across integrated MVP features
  • Integration into a focused, high-performance team
  • Priority consideration for future paid roles

We Strongly Encourage You to Apply If...

  • You come from a non-traditional path in tech or sport
  • You’re early in your computer vision journey, but ready to grow fast
  • You believe technology should unlock access, not widen the gap

We believe every player, coach, and club deserves elite analysis, no matter where they come from. If you can help us build it, we want to hear from you.
