Plant Operator Assistant $25-30 per hour
Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation Economic Development Corporation is seeking a Plant Operator
Assistant to support the primary plant operators of the TFNEDC Hydropower Operations in their
daily and weekly duties.
Our three hydro sites Canoe Creek Hydro and Winchie Creek Hydro as well as for Haa-ak-suuk
Creek Hydro work with Specific Operators. As an Operator Assistant you will work under both
operators at all three hydro sites. With the general direction of the primary plant operator and the
plant manager, the Plant Operator Assistant is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and/or
restoring plant operations during all scheduled operating periods; ensuring safety measures are in
place and safety procedures are followed; ensuring environmental protection measures and
procedures are followed; acting as the contact person at the plant site for the corporation and
when authorized personnel are expected.
Specific responsibilities of this position are as follows.
1. Daily Support of Plant Operations
Monitoring, maintaining and/ or restoring plant operation during all scheduled operating
periods by:
Performing onsite facility inspections at a minimum of once a week.
Using a company supplied computer for remote HMI plant.
Monitoring at a minimum of two times dail.
Performing routine maintenance and cleaning of the plant facilities, equipment and
systems as per the plant maintenance schedule.
Documenting plant conditions and requirements in the plant logbook.
Communicating the requirements and concerns regarding the plant to the primary
operator and operations manager.
Routine observation and maintenance of general equipment and infrastructure.
Monitoring and responding appropriately to plant alarms, trips and lockouts which
may appear through automated e-mails, and/or telephone calls 24 hours per day 7
days per week.
Answering telephone calls and e-mails while on site. Relaying time sensitive
messages to appropriate company staff as required.
Coordinating and assisting with site visits from project visitors, supporting trades or
specialists as requested by the Plant Manager.
Maintaining the inventory of spare parts, and supplies, noting the part identification,
purpose for use, updated quantity on hand and recommending.
Purchases to maintain adequate inventory levels as noted on the Inventory Control
Sheets.

2. Training and Skill Development
• (A detailed training program will be provided to successful applicant(s), this will
include Safety training and operations)
• Studying available documentation on the plant systems and their components.
Taking additional operation training as required.
Committing to continuous quality improvement of the plant operations through a
comprehensive understanding of how the plant components operate individually, and
as a system. Close observation of how the performance of the plant responds to
external and internal changes and adjustments.
3. Administrative Support
• Maintaining and submitting a time sheet of hours worked bi-weekly to the Plant
Manager for payroll records and operational budgeting.
Recording the hours worked by contractors in the plant logbook.
The Plant Operator will be provided with a company credit card for purchase of
common plant maintenance supplies. Receipts for purchased items must be submitted
by month end to the company office for accounting.
4. Workplace Safety
• Adhering to company Safety Standard Operating Procedures
(SOPs)
Maintain routine inspection of the facility to identify and log potential safety hazards.
Correct and log potential safety hazards where possible.
5. Facility Security
• Maintain routine inspection of the facility to identify and log potential security issues
in the company log book.
Correct and log potential security concerns where safe to do so.
Terms of employment:
Working hours for this position are undefined. There will be times when the operator is
required on site to perform or assist with unscheduled repairs to the plant.
The plant operator will maintain their own site vehicle capable of carrying some tools and
equipment and accessing the water intake under reasonable conditions. Vehicle expenses
will be reimbursed at an agreed rate per kilometer subject to renegotiation as costs
change.
During shut down periods, the plant operator may take up to three weeks annual leave.
Annual leave must be approved by the Plant Manager one month in advance.
Company members or contract operators will cooperate as a project response team where
needed or spell off the operator if work periods become excessive. Overtime will not be
considered in this position.
Employment performance and conditions will be reviewed annually with the Operations
Manager.

The Plant Operator Assistant must display the following technological competencies:
Electrical aptitude: Knowledge of basic electrical components and theory with the
objective of understanding plant operations and safe working conditions.
Mechanical aptitude: Knowledge of basic mechanical components and workings with
the objective of understanding plant operations and safe working conditions.
Maintenance abilities: General proficiency in tool use and skill ranging from basic
carpentry, basic plumbing, basic electrical and general upkeep.
Communication skills: Competent oral and written skills along with basic computer use
and email communication.
Problem solving skills: The ability to objectively identify problems and evaluate
potential solutions using data, knowledge, consultation and insight.
Preference will be given for a qualified Indigenous candidate.
