Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
  • Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
  • Decontaminate and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Understand all physicians' orders completely.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport and store them at required temperatures.
  • Place samples in appropriate collection containers and accurately label them.
  • Follow specific procedures for specimen transport to maintain integrity.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques.
  • Venipuncture expertise.
  • 2 plus years of experience.
  • Ability to handle hard stick collections.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years of experience in a fast-paced environment.

Work Environment

This position is located at the Sterling PSC. Typical hours are approximately 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.50/hr.
