Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
- Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
- Decontaminate and update patient information.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Understand all physicians' orders completely.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store them at required temperatures.
- Place samples in appropriate collection containers and accurately label them.
- Follow specific procedures for specimen transport to maintain integrity.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques.
- Venipuncture expertise.
- 2 plus years of experience.
- Ability to handle hard stick collections.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2 years of experience in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment
This position is located at the Sterling PSC. Typical hours are approximately 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.50/hr.
