The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position requires expertise in blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging, data recording, maintenance, decontamination, and updating patient information.
Responsibilities
+ Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
+ Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
+ Decontaminate equipment and update patient information.
+ Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
+ Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously.
+ Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
+ Understand and follow all physicians' orders.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
+ Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport.
Essential Skills
+ Proficiency in specimen collection and phlebotomy techniques.
+ Experience with blood draws on all types of patients, including hard sticks.
+ Knowledge of urine and thyroid testing procedures.
+ Strong data entry skills and attention to detail.
+ Computer proficiency.
+ Experience in hospital, ER, and urgent care settings.
+ Excellent venipuncture skills.
+ Customer service experience.
+ Phlebotomy certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ High School Diploma or GED required.
+ 1-2 years of relevant experience needed.
Work Environment
This role is based in a doctor's office, which is medium-sized. The phlebotomist is expected to perform between 15 to 20 draws daily and stand for the majority of their shift. Although experience with geriatrics is preferred, it is not mandatory. The position involves working both independently and collaboratively with other employees. The working hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, typically finishing by 4:30 PM.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
