PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The set hiring rate for this position is $30/hourly

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

The Permit Technician performs as a front-line team member for walk-in, phone, and online customers, addressing citizen and contractor inquiries and determining the best course of action for plan intake, processing approvals and issuing permits for the Permit Center under the Development Services Department. Combined areas include the Building Division, Public Improvements, Civil Plan, Land Development, and Zoning requirements. This position will require public contact with an emphasis on high level customer service; with the focus on the customer; in an environment where customer service is the priority. This position requires you to regularly work in our office environment.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans tracking.
  • Computer data entry/retrieval functions and quality assurance.
  • Researches, prepares, examines, and processes construction documents and applications for building permits.
  • Acts as a liaison between the customer and department or agency staff by following up on customer requests or complaints and solving problems related to service issues.
  • Verifies setbacks ensuring compliance with the zoning code.
  • Utilizes independent discretion to provide high volume of telephone and in person interactions with the public for technical code interpretation inquiries and assistance.
  • Calculates building permit fees and taxes based on valuation.
  • Electronically performs permit intake for completeness and routes inquiries to appropriate staff members and department or agency staff.
  • Maintains/updates electronic records daily for building plans and permits, building inspections, and code records requests.
  • Electronic scanning of documents.
  • Issues/renews contractor and supervisor licenses.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associates Degree or 2 years college level course work or directly related experience preferred

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of customer service experience required
  • At least 2 years of experience in an office setting required
  • At least 2 years of experience in building construction (residential and commercial) and/or code compliance preferred

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of general office procedures, telephone etiquette, and demonstrate the ability to efficiently and effectively create and produce quality detailed work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Knowledge and application of construction materials, municipal and building codes, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of mathematics including algebra and geometry.
  • Knowledge of personal computers with related software applications with a windows operating system.

Skills:

  • Skill in the operation of a computer system with related software.
  • Efficiently and accurately key information using a keyboard and skill in performing data entry.

Abilities:

  • Demonstrated the ability to create and produce quality detailed work with a high level of accuracy efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, customers, and citizens.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Handle multiple tasks and projects, set appropriate priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative and respectful working relationship with staff and others.
  • Handle stressful situations with tact and diplomacy while maintaining a high level of customer service.
  • Independently read and interpret construction documents, and maps in relation to the tasks of the job.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Light physical work requiring ability to lift and/or move a maximum of 20 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking and frequent standing at the counter.
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and general office equipment.
  • Clear vision to read and interpret reports, documents, and other written material.
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily works in a clean, comfortable, office environment.

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including a personal computer, calculator, architectural and engineering scales, fax/copy machines, multi-line telephones, and code books.
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
