Summary

Routine security work including campus surveillance, traffic control, securing buildings, and accident and theft investigation, if required. Position could include weekends and after hours shift details. Security officers may also work during normal college hours, with other APOSTC certified officers.

  • Maintain campus surveillance by foot and vehicular patrol.
  • Issues citations for traffic and parking violations and directs incoming and outgoing traffic.
  • Monitors severe weather, checks for leaks, fires and safety hazards, checks fire extinguishers.
  • Locks all rooms containing equipment; secure all interior and exterior doors of building; unlock buildings.
  • Investigate accidents and thefts; complete and file appropriate reports, if required.
  • Assist state and local law enforcement agencies.
  • Assist students, faculty, and visitors with vehicular problems, assist visitors with locating buildings.
  • Serve as dispatch/communications officer as needed.
  • Answer telephone, monitor radio, and deliver messages.
  • May be required to make mail deliveries and/or deliver bank deposits.
  • Defend members of the campus community by confronting potentially violent and armed individuals.
  • Assist with fire evacuation, active shooter, lock down drills, and crime prevention efforts.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed to ensure appropriate shift coverage.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Perform all duties with professionalism.

MINIMUM EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

Education: High School or GED diploma required; Associate degree preferred

Experience: Experience with police communication and/or law enforcement, or the military preferred

Licenses: Current Alabama driver’s license required

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Campus procedures, rules and guidelines.
  • State and Local laws.
  • Driving rules.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Make mathematical computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed.
  • Drive a motorized vehicle.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with students, other employees and the public.
  • Must successfully pass the APOSTC handgun qualification course before carrying a handgun on duty and annually thereafter.
  • Must successfully complete an ACCS dim light firearms qualification course annually.
  • Must complete use of force/legal issues course annually.
  • Must complete a certification course and recertify annually with their less lethal force option before carrying the less lethal option on duty.
  • Must successfully complete advanced firearms training.
  • Must complete a minimum 16 hours active shooter response training course prior to duty assignment for hours that the college is open for business.
