Description
Specializing in operational technology (OT), the OT Network Engineer focuses on supporting the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, virtual servers, firewalls, and wireless networks that keep the City’s utility infrastructure running. You’ll contribute to the security and performance of water facilities systems, maintain automated water meter networks, and manage backup environments that support reliable and consistent utility operations.
In addition to OT responsibilities, you’ll help operate and improve the City’s broader technology environment, including data centers, virtualization platforms, network storage, and networking equipment. This includes configuring secure networks, managing backups, and restoring data when needed. You’ll also respond to support requests through the City’s help desk system, working alongside the Information Technology (IT) team to meet the technical needs of departments and employees city-wide.
Essential Job Duties
What You’ll Do in This Role:
- Support the management of OT firewall systems, including patching, deployment, and ongoing monitoring.
- Assist with the maintenance and improvement of the OT layer 3 network across multiple facilities.
- Help manage and optimize the OT wireless network.
- Maintain and update the OT virtual server infrastructure, including configuration of storage, computing resources, and network settings.
- Oversee and upgrade the OT system’s secure and redundant back up systems. Monitor storage use and configuration, and perform system restores as needed.
- Implement, configure, troubleshoot, and support the Automated Water Meter Reading (AMR) system. Coordinate with AMR field crews and work closely with the Customer Service Division to ensure accurate and timely utility billing.
- Assist in designing, maintaining and deploying disaster recovery strategies and technologies.
- Perform capacity planning analysis and other needs assessments in support of?virtualization and?storage architecture strategy.?
- Assist City personnel in the selection, purchasing, and implementation of network hardware and software.
- Assists in the preparation of system, program, security and user policies and procedures.
- Participate in the preparation of the City’s annual budget as it pertains to technology; submit budget recommendations.
- Perform system upgrades with minimal business impact. For upgrades requiring downtime, schedule during off-business hours.
- Utilize the IT help desk software to provide technical assistance.
- Proactively scrutinize network and system performance utilizing system logs and monitoring software; address technical issues as they arise.
- Participate in the IT department’s on-call rotation. In emergency circumstances, be available to on-call staff to assist with network related outages.
- Cover and cross train other IT Network Engineer positions.
- Assist Network & Security Manager and IT Director with duties.
Minimum Qualifications
You Have:
- A bachelor’s degree with coursework in management information systems, computer science, or a related field.
- Possession of or ability to obtain Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification within six months of hire.
- Four years of increasingly responsible experience in Cisco networking, network storage, virtualization technologies, System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), and Windows Server Active Directory.
- Experience analyzing, designing, programming, installing, configuring, and upgrading a variety of computer systems and programs.
- Experience overseeing the design, development, and implementation of software and hardware solutions, systems, or products.
- Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and train others in computer hardware and software programs.
- Ability to present technical ideas in user-friendly language.
- Experience performing system, network, and database administration duties.
- Skilled in analyzing data and developing logical solutions to complex computer application and programming problems.
- Familiarity with installing network cabling and other components associated with networking technologies.
- Ability to prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.
*Successful candidates must maintain a local residency (up to 100-mile radius outside the city limits of Durango, CO) and successfully complete a fingerprint background investigation to include local, state, and federal criminal history.
