Summary

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets. Reporting to the Commissioner, the Operations Assistant will manage the administrative operations for the Commissioners office.

The Responsibilities Will Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Manage administrative and secretarial operations for the Commissioner’s offices.
  • Prepare agenda for, and records the proceedings and statements at, meetings and conferences.
  • Prepare and/or edits correspondence and reports.
  • Screens telephone calls, messages and incoming materials.
  • Maintains the Commissioner’s private files and keeps the Commissioner informed of pending matters and appointments.
  • Accompany the Commissioner to meetings and walkthroughs across the five boroughs.
  • May be required to operate a department vehicle when necessary

ASSISTANT TO THE COMMISSIONER - 04101

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Baccalaureate Degree and two (2) years of full-time paid experience in an administrative or managerial position; or
  • High School graduate and four (4) years of full-time paid experience as described above; or
  • A satisfactory equivalent.

Preferred Skills

  • Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. - MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) proficiency. - Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills. - Outstanding communication and writing skills. - Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to juggle various priorities and deliver under strict deadlines.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
