Summary
As an office support staff position, the Nutrition Assistant learns and implements WIC program policies
and procedures to assist with service delivery of food benefits and education to families participating in the
WIC Program. This position is designed to provide overall training and orientation to the WIC Program for
optimal service delivery while meeting requirements to initiate the Statewide WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA)
Certification and Training Program.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Learn, apply and explain WIC program regulations, procedures and requirements for participation to
potential and existing WIC participants and community
Welcome and greet incoming applicants/participants and prioritize needs for various services within a
WIC clinic setting
Gather applicable eligibility information, conduct initial screening and determine eligibility for WIC
program services including income, residency, identification and category-specific information
Collect certification documentation and prepare files for nutrition assessment and final eligibility
determination
Follow appropriate Separation of Duties policies and procedures to complete enrollment and
certification of participants
Learn functionality of and utilize WIC-specific computer system (WIC WISE ) for data entry,
scheduling and assessment of benefits
Educate participants on non-nutrition issues such as program orientation, the WIC Card including
benefits and food package information
Provide WIC orientation and materials to applicants seeking services
Complete benefit issuance processes for all eligible WIC participants
Complete appropriate disqualification policies for any participant deemed ineligible for program
Refer participants to appropriate community resources/services, healthcare providers, etc. as determined
by individual needs
Provide telephone support including scheduling and rescheduling of appointments and/or directions to
WIC locations
Provide customer service to participants arriving in-person at WIC offices
Complete Pronto screenings (anemia-screening device) on WIC participants needing biochemical results
for certification
Weigh and measure women, infants and children needing anthropometric data for certification or
follow-up appointments
Communicate effectively and provide quality customer service with a diverse clientele through
professionalism, efficiency, and utilizing problem solving
Assist with training and orientation of new WIC Staff
Assist with translation of nutrition education or breastfeeding promotion and support topics to
participants as needed, including but not limited to interpretation and written translation for classes
and/or counseling
Organize and file any additional paperwork that is not uploaded to the WIC WISE system
Maintain order and cleanliness of work space to include phone room and front desk areas
Work up to two evenings per month as needed and at sites as assigned
Participate in community outreach and local vendor liaison activities as needed
Complete position-specific competency checklists and quality assurance checks to confirm knowledge
Complete a series of training to demonstrate competency in the following areas to become eligible to
initiate WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) Training following tasks as outlined in the California WIC
Nutrition Assistant (WNA) Certification Training Manual: (within first 6 months – 1 year):
o WIC WISE Computer Based Training (CBT) & Instructor Led Training (ILT)
o WIC Orientation
o 20 hour breastfeeding promotion and support training
o Communication and Cultural Competence
o Nutrition and Health Training
Basic Nutrition
Nutrition Assessment for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Moms, Children and Infants
Exit Counseling for graduating participants (postpartum moms, children at age 5)

Associates Degree in nutrition education or other health-related area
Understanding of WIC Program and target population
Awareness of community resources for low-income families
Fluent in Spanish, Russian, or a Southeast Asian Language
Excellent communication skills
