Job Summary

The Assistant Unit Director supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care to patients undergoing treatment for hematological and oncological diagnoses. Assists in ensuring the quality of patient care delivery in a specific patient care area and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources on a 24-hour basis. May assume full responsibility for the unit in delegated areas and in the absence of the manager.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $221,500 - $241,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The 66-bed Adult Hematology / Oncology / Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) / Cellular Therapy Unit is a fast-paced, highly specialized unit located on the eleventh floor of the of Long Hospital and the twelfth floor if the hospital. Staff provide exceptional patient centered care to acutely and chronically ill adults with complex hematological and oncological diagnoses. Nurses are highly trained to provide multiple treatment modalities, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, peripheral blood/bone marrow transplants, and cellular immunotherapy. The staff excels in symptom management and provides compassionate care to patients throughout the various stages of their treatment and recovery. Nurses are also trained to support Phase I-III clinical research activities on the unit to further develop cutting edge treatment and care. Professional development of the staff is supported through participation in classes, seminars, and conferences as well as unit councils, quality improvement projects, and community activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
  • Recent administrative oversight in an inpatient environment; for example previous experience as an Assistant Unit Director, Charge Nurse or other similar role.
  • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit.
  • In-depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine an appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
  • Strong knowledge of hospital-wide systems and change implementation; Experience with Intradisciplinary collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources matters and employee performance. Provides input to decision-makers on human resources matters.
  • Knowledge of Lean principles and change management.
  • Clinical Nurse III competency level.
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Oncology and chemotherapy administration experience
  • Master's Degree
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certificate
  • ACLS
  • ANCC certification in oncology, BMT, palliative care, and/or Medical-Surgical Nursing

License/Certification

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • CPR, BLS
