The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide a wide range of security services to protect students, personnel and property both during the school day and when school is not in session. The position is responsible for monitoring school property and responding appropriately to security or safety risks, enforcing security policies and procedures and taking appropriate action in the case of violation, assisting law enforcement officers with investigations and incident response, maintaining accurate records and reports, and performing related tasks as assigned. The position works under general supervision independently developing work methods and sequences.

Makes special and routine patrols of school facilities; observes school activities and performs surveillance activities as appropriate discover criminal activity.
Apprehends and arrests persons committing criminal acts on school or Board property.
Responds to silent intrusion alarms along with law enforcement officers and assists in conducting facility searches; assists officers with investigations and testifies in court as requested.
Assists in providing crowd control and personal security for staff and school commissioners at public Board meetings.
Evaluates school/administrative office security equipment, policies, procedures and protocols, and makes appropriate recommendations for improving physical plant security.
Assists in security activities during periods of civil unrest or other stressful times.
Assists in conducting traffic accident investigations involving school system vehicles or personnel; provides traffic control when directed
Promotes a positive image of the District, school and security department through interaction with students, parents, teachers and administrators; encourages positive problem-solving by working closely with school administrators, students, Memphis Police Department officers and citizens
Operates and maintains a vehicle furnished for duty; maintains proficiency in the use and maintenance of firearms
Generates and maintains detailed records for all activities while on duty
Compiles data for and prepares records and reports as required.
Attends meetings, workshops and classes as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills and to maintain certifications.
Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
Graduation from an accredited high school with a high school diploma or GED;
(2) two years of related security experience; or
Possess P.O.S.T. certification prior to employment or be eligible for P.O.S.T. certification at the end of mandatory training required by the State of Tennessee.
Must complete mandated law enforcement training course;
Must possess firearm certification.
Must be 21 years of age or older.
Must pass a criminal background check, including a drug screening.
Must meet minimal physical training standards before employment.
(Associate’s degree or 60 college credit hours in a related field preferred).

Degree Equivalency Formula
Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
