ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking for a Backend Engineer to join our team, specialising in high-traffic, content-heavy WordPress solutions. This role is ideal for someone with strong PHP, JavaScript, and API integration skills, experienced in optimising large-scale WordPress platforms for performance, security and scalability.

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll work closely with the Production Director & the engineers team to develop custom WordPress solutions, enhance platform performance and integrate third-party services. Your responsibilities will span from routine updates and deployments to custom plugin development, API engineering and AI-driven feature development.

This is an opportunity to work in a PaaS (Product as a Service) environment, developing and maintaining digital application frameworks in Node.js & Java, while ensuring the seamless integration of AI-driven and third-party services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Platform Development & Optimisation

• Custom WordPress development: themes, plugins and backend enhancements
• Custom fields & CMS configuration: optimising UI (backend), performance and database structures
• Performance engineering: optimising backend processes and database efficiency while collaborating with Core Web Vitals and DevOps leads on performance improvements
• API & feed development: designing and maintaining integrations with third-party services

Maintenance & Deployments

• Routine updates: evaluating, implementing, testing and documenting WordPress core/plugin updates
• Live deployments: ensuring stability and minimising downtime during releases
• Troubleshooting & bug fixes: resolving technical issues in production and staging environments

Integrations & Third-Party Services

• Setting up and managing third-party plugins (e.g., forms, newsletters, multilingual solutions)
• Implementing subscription solutions for high-traffic content platforms
• Overseeing ads integration and performance tracking setups

Innovation & AI Features

• Working on AI-powered enhancements for content automation and personalisation
• Contributing to the development of digital application frameworks (Node.js & Java-based)

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in PHP & JavaScript (ES6+)
• Expertise in WordPress development: custom themes, plugins and backend optimisations
• Experience with API integrations (RESTful, GraphQL) and third-party services
• Strong database skills: MySQL optimisation and performance tuning
• Familiarity with caching strategies (Redis, Varnish, etc.)
• Familiarity with cloud-based deployment (AWS, Google Cloud, or similar)
• Understanding of Core Web Vitals and performance optimisation
• Experience with headless WordPress setups is a plus
