* Microbiologist II - $29.20 per hour
* Microbiologist III - $30.22 per hour

Position Summary & Responsibilities

The position (K0232304)
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Microbiologist Series opening in Topeka. This position is with the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories and is strictly in office. The incumbent in this role will perform microbiology analysis for E Coli and Coliform presence/absence in water following EPA Methods. This includes QC preparations, equipment maintenance, and waste disposal.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Perform ELISA analysis for Harmful Algae Blooms in water following EPA methods or standardized methods. This includes QC preparations, equipment maintenance, and waste disposal.
Responsibilities include: training new staff on methods; monitoring annual demonstration of competency training for current trained staff and ensuring proper documentation is maintained for all training; overseeing the daily functions of the lab, ensuring samples are being analyzed within proper hold times and QC is meeting EPA requirements; troubleshoot any issues that arise.
Communicate with Bureau of Water or other customers/collectors to assist with sample results, information, or issues that may arise. Ensure samples are collected appropriately and samples are received in a timely manner.
Qualifications
* Education:
* Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* Licensing & Certification:
* Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
* Minimum Qualifications:
* Microbiologist I
* Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* Microbiologist II
* Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* AND 1+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
* OR master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* AND must be a general supervisor (as defined by CLIA) within 6 months of hire.
* OR take on a quality improvement project assigned by their manager to either enhance or expand the capabilities of the scientist and the laboratory.
* OR must be cross-trained into an additional laboratory unit within 6 months of hire.
* Microbiologist III
* Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* AND 4+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
* OR PhD in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* OR 2+ years of experience a clinical laboratory setting AND master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* AND must be a technical supervisor (as defined by CLIA) within 6 months of hire or be cross-trained into an additional laboratory unit.
* OR must be a general supervisor (as defined by CLIA) within 6 months of hire AND take on a quality improvement project assigned by their manager to either enhance or expand the capabilities of the scientist and the laboratory.
* OR must be cross-trained into an additional laboratory unit within 6 months of hire.
* OR must serve as a member of the Laboratory Response Network team for emergency preparedness.
* AND must be a member of an APHL community of practice that is relevant to their laboratory work.
* Microbiologist IV
* Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* AND 10+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
* OR 5+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting AND PhD in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* OR 7+ years of experience a clinical laboratory setting AND a master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry or other related field. Must have at least 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Biology, 6 semester hours of Chemistry, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
* AND must be a technical supervisor (as defined by CLIA) within 6 months of hire.
* OR be cross-trained into a total of 3 laboratory units within 1 year of hire.
* AND must be a member of an APHL community of practice that is relevant to their laboratory work.
* AND must be assigned writing, tracking, and reporting responsibilities for a health grant project related to their work.
* Preferred Qualifications:
* Master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry or biochemistry.
* PhD in microbiology, biology, chemistry or biochemistry.
* EPA certification for drinking water labs.
* Experience with ELISA testing procedures.
* Two years of work experience in a microbiology laboratory.
* One year of experience working in an EPA-regulated water testing laboratory.
* Knowledge of Lab Information Management Systems.
* Writing and updating SOP's, Test Methods, QA Plans.
* Attention to detail in analytical work and writing.
* Isolation and identification of bacteria.
* Drinking water testing for coliforms.
* Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
* Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
