Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to carry out a range of highly technical and programmatic duties that encompass complex medical, occupation and industry coding. Codes occupational injury and fatality data. Performs edits to occupational injury and fatality data, identifies and resolves data discrepancies, performs on-line computer functions, maintains, and understands the operations of the Occupational Disease Registry (e.g., Adult Blood
Lead Registry [ABLR], Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries [CFOI], and the Occupational Safety and Health Survey [OSH]). Serves as the liaison between laboratories reporting cases to
Occupational Disease Registry components such as ABLR, other facilities relating to existing cases, and agencies providing documents for all components of the Occupational Disease Registry.
Serves as a Biomedical Coder-Editor for the Occupational Disease Registry.
Job Responsibilities
1. Performs highly complex, technical interpretation and follow-up of occupation and industry data from documentation provided to Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) and abstracts fatal occupational injuries and diseases.
2. Edits Occupational Disease Registry (ODR) reports, forms, and source documents checking for discrepancies and resolves the discrepancies with the appropriate reporting facility or agency.
3. Follows-up on reports received from OSH or CFOI to verify the individual occupation and demographic data.
4. Assists the manager in maintaining the operations of ODR databases and identifying and resolving data problems.
5. Serves as administrative liaison developing rapport and maintaining effective public relations with reporting facilities, local health departments, and agencies providing source documents.
6. Plans, develops, adapts, extends, or revises programs procedures and standards for expansion of services, or to correct program areas of weakness; confers with and assists line supervisors and administrators in installation; performs follow-up to correct problems and determine effectiveness.
7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with courses in public administration, accounting, industrial relations, prelegal or personnel management.
Requires two years professional experience in public administration, business management or accounting.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years of experience verifying data, identifying data problems, and resolving discrepancies.
Two years of experience in locating and accessing Internet resources.
One year experience working with Microsoft software products Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and
Access.
One year experience coding occupational injury and illness cases.
One year experience editing reports, forms, and source documents checking for discrepancies and resolving the discrepancies.
Work Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm
