Position Title: Construction MEP Estimator

Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated MEP Estimator to join our construction team in Richmond, VA. This role is responsible for preparing comprehensive estimates for commercial and industrial projects, with a strong focus on manufacturing and industrial facilities. The MEP Estimator will support preconstruction efforts, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, and contribute to accurate and competitive bids. The ideal candidate has a strong background in estimating structural steel, piping, sheet metal, or other MEP systems and is experienced in using computerized estimating tools like Tekla PowerFab.
Key Responsibilities:
Preconstruction & Estimating
- Analyze construction documents including Instructions to Bidders, Bid Forms, and Scope of Work.
- Perform detailed take-offs for equipment and material related to trade-specific scopes using Tekla PowerFab (or similar).
- Enter all relevant data—material, labor, equipment, vendor/subcontractor pricing—into bid summaries in a timely manner.
- Ensure complete and accurate review of self-performed scopes and subcontractor/vendor quotes.
Coordination & Communication
- Solicit and coordinate subcontractor and vendor pricing to ensure comprehensive bid coverage.
- Distribute plans, specifications, and addenda using company platforms (FTP site, email, etc.).
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as necessary to gain project insight.
- Collaborate with in-house trades (Sheet Metal, Fire Protection, Plumbing, Electrical, Steel, Millwrights) for complete scope development.
Post-Award Support
- Assist in material and equipment procurement following project award.
- Input steel trade estimates into job cost control systems.
- Participate in project turnover meetings with the Operations team.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum 2 years of preconstruction estimating experience or equivalent vocational training.
- At least 5 years of experience in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, pipe, or sheet metal construction (industrial/commercial).
- Proficiency in estimating software such as Tekla PowerFab, Fabtrol, or Fabsuite.
- Strong understanding of structural and miscellaneous metal drawings and construction documents.
- Experience in estimating, scheduling, budgeting, and manpower planning.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and solve problems under pressure.
- Must pass post-offer drug screening and any required background checks.
- Availability to work scheduled hours and travel to job sites as needed.
Preferred:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Proficiency in scheduling tools such as MS Project.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Prior military experience is a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Primarily office-based with regular use of standard office equipment.
- Occasional site visits to construction areas, including industrial plants and ongoing construction zones.
- Physical activity during site visits may include walking, climbing stairs or ladders, and navigating uneven terrain.
Travel:
- Minimal travel required; typically local and not overnight.
Pay Range: Open, Based on Experience
The specific compensation for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
