Summary

Sr. Mechanical Engineering Group Lead


Position Summary

Responsible for instrument-related engineering activities for projects or programs within a business unit as well as management and development of a staff of technical professionals. Responsible for driving business results and acting as ambassadors of the company culture and values. Interfaces and coordinates work activities with Project Management and Project Team.


Key Accountabilities

Essential Functions:

  • Independently acts as Lead / Functional Manager of a group of engineering and/or technical staff within a specific Function.
  • Plans and supports professional development of direct reports. Monitors and determines staff training needs.
  • Monitors performance of direct reports.
  • Hires, disciplines, or discharges human resources in accordance with company policy.
  • Recommends improvement initiatives and drives or encourages others to implement.
  • Assists with Function's budget.
  • Monitors and ensures that adequate personnel, equipment, and material resources are available to meet project milestones within a program.
  • Reviews Group's schedules for assigned projects. Tracks metrics for assigned projects to monitor development time to aid in the creation of predictable schedules. Provides contingency plans for identified conflicts. Incorporates lessons learned from past projects.
  • Ensures that the Group's activities are planned, performed and prioritized in alignment with corporate goals and objectives.
  • Provides technical support to lead or provides staff for investigations in support of development and/or on-market activities.
  • Assigns and evaluates technical work. Provides technical guidance to direct reports. Responsible for the quality of deliverables from within the Group.
  • May act as an Individual contributor, core team or technical lead for a specific project, depending on the size of the Group
  • Accountable for the completion of assigned deliverables in accordance with approved schedules.
  • Effectively communicates technical information to multidisciplinary teams in the form of documentation, presentations and technical summaries.
  • Identifies product defects and recognizes outliers in results. Able to explain and document product defects and their impact.
  • Defines methodology and processes for data analysis. Coaches team on approach.


Secondary Functions:

  • May lead teams in the resolution of technical issues
  • May author documentation in support of design control activities
  • May help define and communicate engineering strategy & roadmap for the Group

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with a minimum of 15 years of product development experience, or an MS in Mechanical Engineering with at least 10 years of experience
  • Experience with parametric CAD modeling tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo), and proficiency in other design-related software
  • In-depth knowledge of GD&T and conducting tolerance stack-up analyses for complex assemblies
  • Direct experience designing and developing large electromechanical systems, including motion systems and mechanisms, thermal management (heating/cooling), and precision fluidics
  • Solid understanding of various manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal, injection molding, and casting
  • Proven ability to mentor and coach junior engineers, particularly in DfX (Design for Excellence) principles such as reliability, cost efficiency, manufacturability, and ease of assembly
  • Familiarity with quality systems and regulations applicable to medical devices
  • Exceptional cross-functional communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong people management skills including driving a design team towards success as well as career development
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a design team
  • A clear, systems-level understanding of the mechanical engineering function within the broader product development lifecycle
  • Effectively planning and organizing tasks with ability to drive direct reports for achieving objectives


Preferred Qualifications:

  • New product development experience specific to IVD medical devices
  • Ability to use networking skills to connect direct reports with technical leaders and subject matter experts to improve technical acumen
  • Ability to influence and align cross-functional teams around shared goals and foster transparent communication
  • Comfortable leading through all phases of the product development lifecycle—from product definition, conceptualization, design, implementation, verification and validation, and design transfer
  • Project management experience including risk assessment, budget oversight, and executive-level reporting
