Nuclera is a venture-backed, founder-driven biotech company headquartered in Cambridge, UK with significant operations in Boston, USA. We are beginning this mission through the launch of our eProtein Discovery™ platform. eProtein Discovery is a breakthrough protein expression, characterization, and purification technology, consisting of a lab-based benchtop instrument, cloud-based software and proprietary cartridges and consumables. The goal is to enable rapid protein access to life science researchers around the world.
We are looking for a mechanical engineer experienced in building and maintaining custom equipment to join the device integration team and work broadly across departments at Nuclera. This position will involve supporting all teams within Nuclera US and includes activities such as designing prototypes for testing or automation, assisting in installing or modifying equipment, manufacturing custom parts, coordinating with equipment vendors for new parts/machines, fixing and maintaining existing machines or benches and improving their reliability. The ideal candidate will have direct experience with designing, building and maintaining custom mechanical and/or electro-mechanical equipment.
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of working on interdisciplinary teams and being able to understand concepts across several scientific disciplines.
About the role:
- Work in an interdisciplinary team to support activities related to device integration and testing, and support groups across the company more broadly in activities relating to mechanical setups or machines
- Develop new designs, get part manufactured, build new machines and maintain/fix existing machines/setups to ensure minimal downtime
- Develop a deeper understanding for the mechanical aspects of our eProtein Discovery and devices, and participate in their continued improvement and evolution
Requirements
Essential:
- Undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline + 3 years of work experience, OR master’s degree in mechanical engineering + at 2 years of work experience
- Direct experience in part design, part integration, and building complex systems
- Deep knowledge of GD&T
- Experience working with vendors on designing parts/machines
- Proficiency with SolidWorks
- Rapid prototyping experience (3D printing)
- Workshop experience (cutting, drilling, etc.)
Desirable:
- Experience with design for injection molding
- Experience with CMM systems
- Experience with PDM systems
- Tolerance stack up
- Automation experience integrating systems that include aspects such as motion, temperature control, magnetic actuation, electrical power delivery, lighting, etc.
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment
- Basic coding skills (Python)
- Materials testing experience (fracture, fatigue, stress)
